hi all I seen this ad on craigslist and and shot the guy an email sending him here for advice this was his question :

I have a wisconsin 12 horse engine with a coil ignition that fries the ignition points when trying to start.cant find any shorts anywhere. replaced points and condenser at $40 and it still smokes and heats the points and looses the spring tension so they won't close. any ideas? please help

You need a resistor coil. There is too much voltage going to the points. You can use a resister coil or install an external resister btween the coil and distributer. You need only 6 volts to coil. You must have a 12 volt system?

after talking with the guy i went over to take a look at what he had and discovered the coil was wired backwards so i hooked it up the right way and it fired right up it was converted to 12v and already had a resistor in line but was hooked to neg. side as soon as i reversed it and replaced the points it was running great . Im glad for that as this is the first wisconson ive ever seen and worked on only ever seen pictures of them before this so it was a great moment to see one of these oldies in person and hear it come to life . now i gotta get one when i get some money lol i dont know why or what ill do with it but still gotta get one im sure you guys know the feeling though . thanks for the help
