Default Ontario - A Quality Auction - August 29, 2009!

Greetings everyone,
On August 29, there is to be an excellent public auction near Hamilton, Ontario. Well known area collector and restorer, Harold Kent has decided to offer up his collection for auction. we are starting a thread here and we will post pictures and information as they become available. It seems a little early to start advertising, but that date will be here before we know it. So we will try and keep some regular updates coming.
The sale is being held by Jim McCartney Auction Service of Waterdown, Ontario. I don't think he has it up on his site yet but if you need information re telephone bidding, etc, here is a link:
http://www.auctionsfind.com/mccartney/
The collection includes tractors, vintage garden tractors, gas engines, railway items, small farm antiques and a huge and interesting collection of vintage chain saws and a Studebaker truck. We will add a listing of all the chain saws in the next few days.
Some of the restored tractors will include : 18-36 Hart-Parr, McCormick W-14, John Deere G-M, JD LA, Co-op #3, Custom Model C, Ford 2N (steel), Allis-Chalmers United, McCormick 10-20. There are some unrestored gems that we will list later.
Harold is very well known in the Golden Horseshoe area and has been active at shows here for over 30 years. He has had many excellent displays at shows like Caledonia, Paris, Rockton, Bruce's Landing, Jarvis Corn Fest, Steam Era, Lynden Canada Days and at local Fall Fairs. His mechanical and restoration skills are also well known to anyone who has seen his collection.
As said, this is just the start and we will update this frequently.
Thank you for any interest.

A couple of photos to start - a sweet little McCormick W14, a fine running tractor that is well known at local shows. Not many 14s around! And a JD G that is stamped GM, the M denoting a modified version. A rare tractor and another fine restoration.

Here is another one of Harold's tractors, an Allis Chalmers United. This tractor has the Continental motor. These tractors were brought into Ontario by the Cockshutt Plow Co. of Brantford, Ontario.
This is another fine mechanical restoration and the tractor is painted in the authentic, early shade of orange. This was from original old stock AC paint from an old dealer.

This will maybe wrap up the saw list. There are at least another 70 chain saws not listed and assorted parts.
- there are 12 or so McCulloch saws, made in Toronto ( a couple made in Los Angeles, CA.). Of these, there is one listed as a "Flat Top", also one electric start and one that is described as a "Bow Saw" with that interesting bar! If anyone needs more info on the models available, etc., please ask.
- there are 3 Clintons made in Clinton, MI.

- I.E.L. - #K5589, 8hp, Vancouver, BC. - this is in original shipping box with tools, etc.!

- Gravely Tractor with factory mounted chain saw - we will get a picture of this one - very interesting!

- Sten saw with Cunningham motor!

- large drag saw, belt powered with removeable wheels!

- Wade drag saw with 2 cycle motor!

- Massey-Harris belt powered buzz saw.
- Goold, Shapley and Muir belt powered buzz saw.

- horse drawn ice plough/saw, walk behind handles - unknown make! For cutting block ice for early refridgeration!

- selection of cross cut saws.

Again, we will try to get some pictures of some of the more interesting items when they are out and more accessible.

Here is another of the tractors in the sale. This falls into the "Lesser Known Classics" category. This is a Custom Model C. Many of these tractors were sold into Ontario in the late 40s/early 50s by Regal Motors of Brampton.
They were equipped with the famous Chrysler 6 cylinder motor as well as Chrysler drive train components. This one is an excellent runner with new rear tires. It is serial #C-940. Harold also has Custom #C-174. I don't have pictures of that one yet. It is unrestored and is also lettered for Co-op.

Another of the fine tractors being offered in this sale is the 18-36 Hart Parr, serial #32504. Sorry these are not the best photos as they were taken in storage in the shed with poor light and the breather pipe removed for clearance.
The Hart Parrs were sold into Ontario through the John Goodison Thresher Co. in Sarnia and were a popular threshing tractor here. This one has worked in this area since new and threshed up and down the side roads not far from where it is resting here!
Harold restored the Hart Parr a few years back with a full mechanical refit. It is a fine running and working tractor. He has had it at many of the tractor shows in Ontario over the years and as evidenced by the flags, it has been regularly seen at the local Canada Day parade on July 1st!

Here's a real dandy show piece, a sawing outfit. Not sure of the make but companies like Mathew Moody in Québec made similar outfits. The pictures were taken at a show this weekend so the saw is in good working order, fully rebuilt.

Here's the little Ford tractor with Fergie hitch. This is the War-time 2N version. These were hand start, on steel, plain-jane to save on scarce materials. This is another local tractor, runs excellent and has the rear-mount belt pulley attachment.

Here's another of the "Lesser Known Classics" that will be sold. This is the Co-op, a #3 I think. These were also fitted out with the Chrysler 6 cylinder motors and I believe with other Chryco drive components. A good show and parade tractor and it goes like down the road! It is well restored both mechanically and cosmetically.

I got some pix today of some of the gas engines and the Studebaker truck (REALLY NICE) and I will post them tomorrow hopefully.
But now for something completely different! And the darn thing works nice! Harold built this himself. It is built on a VAC Case but all those attachments are for burning wood smoke instead of gasoline!
In WW2, in Europe, gasoline was impossible to get privately as it was all taken for the military. If you wanted to run gas vehicles, this is what you did. The barrels on the front are for slow-burning the wood so you produce lots of smoke. Then you capture the smoke and feed it into the intake. I just forget what the coil and other affairs are on the side of the tractor but I think they help to cool and filter the smoke and remove water, creosote, etc.?
As I said, this thing works very well and if time permits, he will try to have it running day of sale.
