Hi,
I have a Onan Generator in my camper, during my last trip I had issues with the unit that I was able to trace down to the carb. My question is does anyone have the tune up settings for example: float setting, mixing screw setting points spark plug gap wiring diagrams ETC For a model # 4BGEFA26109F, Serial # E880124932 it is the Emerald I. It would be great if I could get my hands on a service manual. No paperwork cam with the generator when i got the camper. Thank you, |

Typically, these suffer from sitting around doing nothing but evaporating gasoline from the fuel bowl for months. Next thing you know, you have a mess of brown varnish goo in the carb bowl that messes up all the adjustments. A good cleaning is in order.
Better to run the generator with the fuel shut off, running it dry before storage. OR, run it for a half hour EVERY month to exercise it. Anyway, I see so many of these posts and owning an Onan MH generator myself, I had to comment. I'm sure that there will be other posters along here with the nuts and bolts information. |

Billy,
where is the float setting measured form? it may sound like a stupid question but the q-jet on my boat is measured with the carb flipped upside down and applying light pressure on the needle jet, measurement is taken from the carb housing to the nearest edge of the float, but on my 4wheeler it is taken from the flange that the bowl mounts to and the carb is in the upright position. can you pdf the carb setting section of the manual and e-mail it to me? also i did pull the carb apart, and cleaned it out, but do you know if there is a re-build kit availiable? I dont mean to be a pain, its just the wife is getting on me about spending too much time working on the camper, and this is hopefully the last thing for me to fix. Thanks again |

It is measured with the carb upside down. Measure from the carb body to the top of the float. Which is the bottom of the float when upright. I am unable to do much of anything at this time. Scanner is out. Maybe I can get one of the other guys to send you information.

Might as well get use to the other half asking, "Are you done yet". Just part of the glorious, free, wonderful life of RVing. Ha!

Mikisan,
Thanks for the news flash. Im actually thinking about geting thru the rest of this year with this generator, and swaping it out for a Honda, they seem to be a little bit easier to get information , and parts for, but ill hold on making that decision until i see how it works, i may be better off holding on until i have more issues. its just issues only pop up when yo need it, you know hoe that goes |

Maybe it's just me but I'd rather tinker with my Onan than lug around any other generator, (I don't think Honda makes an RV install 'set) although I hear Generac builds a decent one.
Go RVing!!! Mike

Actually the tray that the generator sits in would allow me to put both of my Honda’s and have even more room for storage. Since Honda uses a fuel pump, I would still be able to run them from the camper gas tank using a quick connect like on an outboard boat motor uses. And then I have the benefit of being able to pull the generator out and use on the house if the power goes out. I’m still thinking about it but the more I think about it the more likely I’m going to dump the Onan, and go to Honda. Onan parts and manuals are just too hard to get ahold of, in a pinch. And we all know that if something breaks it happens while you are using it otherwise it wouldn’t break, where with a Honda if anything goes they have re-sellers almost everywhere. I’ve even been able to find a service manual on line.
As far as the exhaust I already made a tube that vents the exhaust about 12 feet up so extending the tube to vent outside the compartment will be easy, and I can vent the generator exhaust above the camper roof. Then there is the benefit of noise, both the Honda’s running at the same time is quieter than the Onan. It just seems to be the wiser option. It just seems to make so much sense that I have to be missing something, otherwise there would be a lot of people doing it. But Thanks for all the help and input by everyone. |

Point well taken but you will have to remove the hondas while genning because portables can't syand to be in any kind of enclosed space.

any decent RV shop has most parts for one of your sets, and onan can get you about anything. I think you'll find this set runs a lot better, and longer, then the hondas you want to put in there.
In carb building, people get awfully carried away with settings, but, if you take notes where everything is currently set, clean the heck out of the carb, and put the screws all back to teh same place, more often then not, it will start up and run great right away. especially important with generators, because if you goober up the governer linkage, you are gonna have a time to get it right again. PM me an email about your manuals Robert |

If you do decide to replace your Onan, offer it to members of this board, first. Keeps it in " the family !"
