Default Old photos of American tractors in Italy

Hi to all,
I don't know how many of you know that a lot of American tractor Companies sold their tractors to the Italian State during WWI for the war efforts and also to help the farmers on their land.
The Italian State bought more than 6,000 tractors from USA during that period.

Here you have a photo of a CASE 12-25 threshing in my region. I think the thresher is an english one, maybe a Marshall or a Ruston.

603 CASEs 12-25 were sold to Italy, most of them were Kerosene version.

Regards

Davide

Davide,
Nice old picture, and you know how nice the 12-25's are. How did you verify number of tractors sent to Italy?
Jeff

Just recived in the mailbox an old italian book from 1917 talking about the first tractors that entered in Italy with a lot of information on them.
The book was written after a congress that was made in Rome in 1916 by the italian farmer federation.
I will start scanning the photos and post them here.

Jeff, the 12-25 is an amazing tractor! I will have mine finished for next summer and I will bring it at San Biagio show, to meet his italian brother the UTC4 made by Ulisse Bubba with a Case 12-25 frame and clucth.

The numbers of american tractors imported in Italy during WWI are registered in the UMA that is the italian register of farm machinery.

Regards

Davide

Finally I had some time to scan some photos I have found on a 1915 italian tractor magazine.

I will start with this little one. The article says it is one of the smallest american tractors (only 8HP) built in 1914 and it is called "Bijou". This name was given to the tractor in France during some plow trials.
Anyone can identify the american factory that built this tractor? I couldn't find one like this in my US books.

COuld it be an early Moline tractor?

Regards

Davide

Hi Davide

This looks like a "Universal Motor Cultivator", produced by the Universal Tractor Co. of Columbus, Ohio (see Wendel's encyclopedia p.267). According to the book, the company was bought by the Moline Plow Co. in 1915 and the tractor became the Moline Universal.

There is a picture of a Universal Motor Cultivator in the Keller collection here:

All the best

David

Hello David,
thank you very much for your e.mail. I missed the photo! It is the same tractor. Apparently some of this units arrived here in Italy in 1914 for some tests on italian fields!! I will have to check how many of them arrived here in Italy.
The photo with colors was taken in september 1915 near Piacenza during some trials.

Regards

Davide

Mr. Keller bought the universal at auction in Iowa a few years ago. At the auction, it was represented as the only remaining complete unit.
