I had the 2 rear bolts sheer on me and turned the brush holder into the housing and melted the springs that hold the carbon bushes. Have to make a modification to prevent this, seems like an engineering problem of sorts.
I'm looking P-37-G (old style) or P-25-N (newer style) carbon brush holder and the carbon brushes (3/8" thick 5/8" wide and about an 1" long) Any ideas where I can these and the part numbers any distributors in Ontario Canada? |

So, did the bolts shear, or just came loose? Use grade 8 bolts if they sheared. Use safety wire if they came loose. Things that vibrate need safety wire! Be sure to install the wire where the pressure of the wire TIGHTENS the bolt. This is a "positive" safety wire. I worked on AF jets for years. Important things are safety wired. Otherwise, they fall off. James

I went to LincolnElectric.com clicked on location and got this Canadian link. At the bottom click on "where to buy" to find dealers up there. Quick Links at the top will take you to Service and on lincolnelectric.com quick links take you to manuals download page.

thank you for the replies
No the bolts were sheered off, two 1/4 inch bolts, there not really enough room for any improvements or modifications to the original plate , like for adding a steel sleeve to stiffen the threaded area of the bolt which is about an inch to the bearing housing cage or even a larger bolt. which also keeps the brush holder in place. I think it just a slight bending when load is applied and and the release of the load and perhaps some end to end play. I might be able to get away with a thin hardened steel sleeve 1/16 thickness, the original plate should have been larger in diameter. I work with some machinists I could get them to machine me a larger bearing cage plate and add in for larger bolt with a steel sleeve, I was also thinking of adding in couple of springs to the brush holder cast steel housing to absorb the load motion to the outer case housing lessen the flexing under load. the cast piece is insulated as well. John Lowes at Schnurr Electric Co Ltd in Guelph I recall this place when I was on the road working in the quarry near there. I'll give them a call tomorrow. |

Armature repair photo 22 is the final result photo21 shows the tig weld weld on the 5/16" nut onto the bearing backing plate, the shank bolt is 3/4" x 3/8" with a coarse 5/16" 18 thread, I had to drill and tap the old 1/4" one, I originally got a 1" length but ran into the problem with the threads running to far past the bearing backing plate, cutting the tread down only would have left 1/2 of a thread into the plate fully tighten down. The 5/16 nut did the trick perfectly and giving 1" length
photo 20 shows the nut before tig welded I tighten the nut onto the shank bolt and tightened it to the bearing backing plate I also marked the nut with with a marker and rounded off the edge of the nut on the sander to allow better fit to the machined groove photo 19 |

photo 17 and 16 show the groove machined into the bearing housing to allow for clearance of the larger bolt, the two bolts cost $3.50 cnd the machining and tig welding was free perks of work
the first 2 bolts the guy grabbed were for a machine and cost $94.00 cnd I thought he was kidding lol ouch!photo 13 shows the fitting to the beaning backing plate after sanding the 5/16" nut, the final thing will be to drill the housing to 3/8". |

Looks like some re-engineering there. Hope it works okay. Thanks for the link on the brushes.
