Default Vintage Shop Plans and Ideas?

Anyone have any old shop plans around?

The wife and I are trying to buy some land to build on and I'd like to put up a respectable shop, with one caveat.....I want the building to look "Vintage" when it's done. I'd like it to have a unique look, like something from the 30's-50's. I'm thinking about concrete block, or maybe just even old galvanized tin. Also thought about incorporating a drive through corner, as common on gas stations of this period.

Can anyone help me out with pictures, plans and ideas?

Thanks
Andy

Cool Re: Vintage Shop Plans and Ideas?

I have a couple old books I can look through and see what they have for plans. I know one showed how to make steel low-arch trusses out of angle iron bent and welded with bracing, but I don't remember without digging it out again if it has rough blue prints or just a handfull of pictures and a brief discription of what to do and how to do it.

I think there were other 'plans' in it too for buildings like hog houses and shicken coops.

Thanks Otto,

Sounds like just what I'm looking for. Could you tell me the name and author of the book?

If you were planning on building a shop with that time frame in mind. Wouldn't you need either a steam engine or large hit-N-miss engine to turn the line shaft?

We like to drive around the oldest parts of some cities to marvel at some of the OLD time architecture.
You can get lots of ideas that way.......

I like the lineshaft idea, and just might have to incorporate it, but I'd like things to be modern on the inside, at least to the extent of electricity and such!

I had a really neat building, an old IH dealership built in the 30's to study for ideas, but a tornado a few years back kinda interfered with my plans! It was built with the old clay blocks, commonly refered to here in SE Nebraska as "tile blocks", with a steel truss roof. It was in really nice shape before the twister flattened it out.

My son and I have been building a "dream shop" for the past year and a half. I also was looking for a country look after the contruction started to take shape economics and structural soundness took over. I am adding the details to give the look currently. My son has a website with lots of pictures at www.Joshsdurham.com. I have some rough CAD drawings (not as-builts) I am willing to share if you are interested. The current shop is functional and living up to expectations.

Sorry I haven't followed up on that yet, I went down in the basement and grabbed the book I thought was the one I was refering to, but it turned out to be something else. Now I don't know where I did put the one I refered to and I can't think of the title of it off the top of my head.

I will keep looking for it though and try to post a follow up on here if and/or when I do manage to find it (them) again. If it's too late to help you out, maybe it will at least benefit someone else in the future.

Sorry again for leaving you hanging there.

Our bid wasn't enough, but we're still looking.
Any luck with that book, Otto?
Thanks
