HI all
This is from another fourm http://www.vintagemowers.net/ Report this postReply with quoteLOCO 6042 going to be scraped!!! by victa18rotomo » Sun Aug 23, 2009 3:51 pm Hi guys I know this isnt to do with victas, but we went to forbes on saturday over there in a paddock is a garett loco number 6042 it was the last steam loco to work on NSW lines and weighs 263 tonnes and is one of the biggest steam locomotives in the southurn hemisphere. it was put in to a old village simialar to soverne hill but the village didnt end up working and the engine has been lieing there ever since unloved, we found the owner of the land or he had something to do with it and he said that the council is going to develope the land and demolish all the old buildings and the loco will be cut up for scrap in the next month!!! not many people know about wat is going to happen to it, and it needs to get out there, anyone interested in helping to get this train saved.

I can give you a rough outline of what it takes to save a loco, based on sucsessfull steamers saved in the USA.
Typically, there is someone in charge, who is almost a dictator. He's very passionite, and has that spark that makes politicians sucsessfull in getting the things they want. He's willing to put all his spare time into the project. You are going to need a place to put it. It would be awesome if you can find an industrial building that it fits inside, bonus if it has some kind of rail access. You are going to be hard pressed to put it someplace outside without a major cosmetic restoration on it-no one really wants that in their sight the way it looks. Is it anywhere reasonably near rail access? Can you get the railroads intrested in it? If you are near tracks, and can convince the rail lines to help you move it, you are way ahead-one small switching loco and some temporary track and you can easily put it where you want. You might even find someone in the railroad who would love to have it running, and can get you a lot if he just doesn't have to manage the project. That is assuming it's the same gauge as the rail lines around there. Good luck, it looks like an interesting machine, the running gear looks pretty wild! Robert |

You may want to contact or forward to rail fans about this. To save the historical piece is a fact to a citizen.

Hi Rusty, my first thought of where it might be able to go would be the Wagga Wagga Engine Club in NSW, they have the old Railway Workshop Repair Building for their Clubhouse , not sure if the rail is still connected there though, but it would be a great local area to put it, Anyone from Wagga area on this forum???? what do you think fellas?? cheers John

It would be a nice idea. The Wagga Club's engine shed is the old railway shed but the problem would be that they have moved it a few kms from the railway and probably 100 or so metres higher in elevation at their location on the hill.

I checked with sources within the rail nuts and they have not heard anything on the fate of 6042. The only info I do have is that it was apparantly purchased by the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum and is listed as part of their collection on the web site along with 6039.
