If its got fuel, compression and spark, timing it will go. One of those things is letting you down.My Dad run one of those for years on a shearing plant. He can give a few hints. Call in at our stand at Dowerin (291) and ask.

It could be the magneto. I have had maggies that have an ok spark with the plug sitting on top of the engine but just don't seem to throw a strong enough spark under compression.

Hi E27N,

I have no idea what a sumbeam XD is. I had an N series R&T driving a saw bench. I hadn't used it for awhile, good spark, new plug, fresh fuel, and compression when I turned it over slowly - wouldn't start.

I eventually worked out the inlet valve was sticky on the stem and lagging behind at cranking speed. A bit of oil and off she went.

Might be your problem.

Regards,
Wayne

Cheers for the suggestions guys!

Ray I'd love to get to Dowerin this year BUT the call of duty at HNS is stronger unfortunately Newdegate maybe??? ours is off the shearing plant as well I have photos under the heading "flutter choke orientation" on the antique board.

Wayne and Pat I have just relapped the valves so they are good but I think Pat has hit the nail on the head the mag is too weak to spark under compression I know a guy that can remagnetize locally so i'll call in a favour methinks.

cheers

Andrew

When all tuned up nice and fitted with the muffler that was on the shearing plant they are all but silent. A sweet running engine. I have one here and I need to get the mag done as well. They are a similar engine to the Ronny N. They have more modern shaped castings and a different carby. There were also lots used on 32 volt lighting plants.

What happens if you drop a little petrol into the cylinder through the plug hole ?

See ya,
Graham

How many times has that got us going!I did get a bit carried away with the drop bit years ago and burnt a Villiers on a cement mixer.
Set up at Dowerin today. Looks like a good field day this year. Tracmach were setting up a decent display with some running engines as well as the tractors and trucks.

Dunno I'll have to try! I also think i need a new plug the old one is knackered and I don't think the modern resistor type plug is doing the mag any favours. Graham does the club have a favourite source for old spark plugs i need a Champion '7'

finally got around to taking more pics plus the view from my shed

Check to see if the spark lines up with the mark on the flywheel. Magneto can be fitted in 2 positions 180 degrees apart.
