Default Southern Cross PAA engine age ?

I just bumped into a friend up at the Dowerin field day and he asked me if I knew anything about the years of manufacture of a Southern Cross model PAA engine which I am afraid I didn't, so I said I would ask here.
He is chasing the years of manufacture for the series and also the "year" for his engine which is a 4 HP with the number PAA 6717.
Anyone know ?

Thanks blokes,
Graham

Hi Graham

Southern Cross made what is referred to these days as a large 'P' and a small 'P'
The small 'Ps' as below

2hp PA (Fig 2074) 527 made from 1929-1935
3hp PA-A (Fig 2074) 306 made from 1931-1936
2hp PA-A (fig 2280) 350 made from 1936-1938
3hp PA-A (fig 2280) 559 made from 1936-1939
4hp PF (fig 2280) 60 made from 1937-1938
4hp PA-A (fig 2280) 1411 made 1939-1944

The differant fig numbers are for differant castings

Southern Cross made a lot of engines but in small numbers as above and any SC engine is worth while picking up

Ian

Thanks Ian, I think 1939 will keep Colin happy.
What is a PAA anyway ? I will do a bit of googling shortly to try and find out but its not one I have come across, are they very plentiful ?

Thanks again Ian, while I was replying to you another post turned up. I will still do some more checking but Colin should be happy now,

Hi Graham

There was only 1141 PA-A of Colin's type made and so far there is only 26 on the register these might be the only ones that have survived
Colin's now make 27 survived

Thanks Ian,
I will print this off and send it to him, Colin isn't into computers but he will get a thrill from seeing what you have posted and it will give him some information, I gather he didn't know very much about it at all.

hi guys i have got 3 sourthern cross engines. A p 1307 6hp and 600rpm. I also have 2 engines that look the same as the one in the add but have a hopper on top of the engine and have wico ek mags. One i made into a mailbox for mum as the hopper was smashed and i didnt have all the bits to fix it. It has p 600rpm 2hp and engine number 1105 on the plate. I will get the details off the other one when i'm up the farm later. cam

Hi Mtype
PA 1105 (small P)
Batch 1096-1295
Year 1930
That engine is out of the first batch of PAs made and out of the 527 made there is only 8 including yours on the register
The ones with the water hopper on top are rare

PC 1307 (large P)
Batch 1296-1345
Year 1931
On the large Ps you often find the second letter not stamped
Large 'P' type engines
PB 3hp 250 made from 1927-1930
PB 3 1/2hp 9 made from 1932-1933
PB 4hp 373 made from 1931-1937
PC 5hp 275 made from 1926-1930
PC 6hp 432 made from 1931-1940
PD 7hp twin 10 made from 1920-1930
PD 8hp twin 16 made from 1932-1936
PD 9hp twin 12 made in 1932
PE 12hp twin 37 made from 1929-1936
As I have said before Southern Cross made a lot of engines but in small numbers as above and any SC engine is worth while picking up
