Default How do I separate the engine from the generator?

I have a 4.0 CCK model# 1R/6000P Serial# 0772473722, I need to separate the engine from the generator. I was told to hit the end of the stud at the generator end and that would force them apart, this I have tried but with no luck.

Thank you,
Bob

There are several methods covered in various threads on this forum. I assume you have removed the nut on the generator end of the shaft that extends all the way to the engine shaft, and keeps the armature connected to the engine shaft (I missed that, but it didn't take long to figure it out!). One way is to unbolt the stator from the engine and carefully remove it from around the armature, after removing all the brushes from their holders. You can usually "wiggle" the armature sideways a bit, and it should come apart. Not always, though. Others have installed a grease fitting on the end of the armature and used a grease gun (with the associated pressure) to get the two pieces to separate. The engine shaft is tapered; the armature shaft is not. The fan/adapter is made of aluminum and the shafts are steel; therefore, some "galling" usually occurs that makes the shafts somewhat difficult to remove. The tapered shaft usually comes apart fairly easily; if you have to remove the adapter from the armature, heroic measures sometimes have to be used (heat, a press, etc.). The adapter is keyed to the engine shaft, so the two items won't "slip" on each other. Do a search, and you should find some other options. Hope this helps.

I separated a 5.0 CCK last year, just trying to remember how I did it. As I recall, I used a wooden block with a hammer and tapped on the sides of the rotor (be careful not to hit anything that might bend). I tapped it on different sides and eventually it just fell loose.
The long bolt holds it in place, but once that is loosened, it is just friction that keeps it there. Tapping on the bolt may loosen it or not. Shifting the rotor back and forth will eventually break it free. Good luck,
Ray

That's the same way I did it. Make sure you put something soft under the armature so that it doesn't hit hard - the doggone thing is heavy! The engine shaft is short, and it's tapered, so the armature will come loose all in a bunch.

It seems like the rotor is moving but I cannot get the cast iron case to separate from the engine block.

Have you found all the bolts? I don't remember separating the generator stator from the engine as being difficult at all, except for the fact that the engine and generator, when separated, are each standing on only two feet, and are lopsided weight-wise. I seem to remember that a couple of them are a bit ornery to see and get to, but not terribly so.

First you have to remove the nuts holding the rear bearing plate on. Then you can remove the stator. Then remove the bolt holding the rotor on. The use a block of wood place it on the shaft at the rear bearing. Hit the wood with a large hammer. You may have to rotate the rotor and hit it again. It should come off easy but you do need some thing soft under it to catch it. The front case by the block is held on by four bolts it will not come off until you remove the rotor. If you are trying to pull it off as one assy ain't gonna work. Also remove the brushes before you do anything.

I finally got back to work on the genset and it comes apart very easily when you remove parts in the right order.

Thank you for the help,
Bob

Glad to help. I've taken one apart; Billy has probably taken a BUNCH apart!
