Default Muffler ideas?

As much as I love to hear an old Wisconsin pure, I really need to quiet this thing down...or find a deal on about 400' of lead. Hobart welder/generator with Wisconsin 2 cyl THD. 5 kw, 200 amp, 2200 rpm to weld.

What ever happens must start from 1 1/4 pipe thread, and I was thinking of adapting a small car muffler. I also found a stock silencer off a 400cc utility ATV.

Just curious if anyone knew of a tried and proven small muffler for something like this.

I already tried a tractor muffler off my 1954 JD40 crawler, it sounds wayyyy better but is still a bit too loud for extended use.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I used to get muffler's from an auto dealer, people would buy a car and have the exhaust switched out. Most of them were almost new and were free!!See what a dealer can do and you could try different ones till you get what you need.

Go to a good lawnmower shop, and ask for a nelson muffler in the diameter you want. They are quiet, and are well built.

Swampy:

There's no such thing as a muffler that's too big!

As long as you can adapt the exhaust pipe to it, go for free (or at least cheap) and big.

Take care - Elden

I like the ones that are typically on Onan RV gensets. About 6 or 7 inches in diameter and 14 or 16 inches long.

Not sure who makes them, but most RV stores have a good selection of different sizes.

I put a pair on my Onan CCK powered welder and it just purrs now. Mine had pipe thread coming out of the head too so I used some plumbing pipe to mount them horizontally along the top of the machine. Can't remember what size pipe I used, but the RV muffler was a nice tight fit and clamped good.

Thanks to everybody for all the tips. One thing I was thinking about was an ATV exhaust. Seems alot of folks install performance systems and I found a few on the local craigslist for cheap. I think a utility ATV like a Honda Rancher or Foreman would adapt to a nice exhaust for me...cheap or free and I would have a spark arrestor also!

Should be nice and quiete!

Cant argue with a Nelson muffler. Them things quiet the loudest engine.

Coleman Surplus has a PE95 generator muffler that has a 1 1/4" pipe thread on one end and a 1 1/2" thread on the other that might work in your application. I have one that I have used the 1 1/4" end as an inlet and it works very well that way. Something to think about

The muffler shops usually have some good almost new ones they have cut off to put glass packs on someone's rig you can get free or cheap. Would try that before spending time to make one. Stanley Muffler catalog has some made to fit all kinds of tractors, combines and Wisconsin engines but not sure if they have one for yours.

Stanley Wisconsin mufflers....

Thanks for all the ideas. I ended up adapting a small car muffler 1 1/2 in and out. Works great and about all you can hear is engine chatter and the valve train!

Do you know anyone who has changed their motorcycle pipes for louder ones. The stock ones are pretty quiet but are a little longer than your original, also most of them had boxes ahead of them which made them even quieter, good luck Capt. Will. PS, I have several stock pipes if you want them.
