Default Mite-E-Mite coil question??????

I have purchased my first two old generators. Usually a statioary engine guy, but these seemed too neat to pass up.

They are Mite-E-Mite 1500 generators, the alternator wheel on one says June, 1975. They were both free-turning and one works now with some new points, carburetor work, and a good cleaning. The other, however has 1 BAD alternator coil, and 1 good coil. At some point in its life, the varnish failed, allowing the ribbon to come into violent contact with the rotor while under load (guessing from the melted metal)

The question is, does anyone have any ideas where I might find a replacement coil?

I will try to post an image of the coil.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
-Chris

These units were made here in Wellsville, NY at the Mite-E-Lite plant on S. Brooklyn Street. McCulloch closed the plant here in the late 70s. All the parts and remaining inventory was loaded up and shipped out. I think it went to California. That was 30+ yrs ago...

If you find another coil. The aluminum fitting through which the mounting bolts go are threaded so you can adjust the position of the coil in the center of the slot they run in. I have worked on two of these. The first on I DID NOT know the coils needed centered. It suffered the same fate as yours. The other one woulsd generate but the magnet and slot did not run true and I fear the same thing will happen to it. These are the only two I have seen.

If you don't want to re-wing it, any competent motor/starter shop should have no problems re winding it for you

Thanks for the replies so far! I talked to the motor shop locally, and they say it takes something called a form winding machine. Guess I'll try looking for a place with one of those. He said it would probably be copper winding if rewound. What are the thoughts on that? It appears to be Aluminum now, would it make a difference if one were Cu and one were Al in the same machine? Should I have them both done?

What do you think?

Thanks!

-Chris

I think finding the flat ribbon aluminum the coil is wound from would be a problem.

I wouldn't run copper and aluminum windings in the same machine, but I think having both coils rewound in copper would not be a problem. It is probably a good idea to rewind the other one anyways, it is probably not far behind the one that shorted out already.

Good point. While I am on here, is there anyone in the Mid-Oklahoma area that knows of a good motor rewinding place?

Lightbulb Mite-E-Mite coil question??????

Several good motor rewinding shops around central oklahoma, Oklahoma city and Tulsa areas! Look in yellow pages!
Evans electric is one, they are not cheap, but it will be better than new when completed, if they will attempt! They have a minimum price for starters!
You might also try flea-bay (e-bay) do a search for NAME OF YOUR GEN then click on save this search! If anything shows up in next 6 mo's or what-ever time you set, it will show up as a notice in your e-mail! (just register) I've seen several guys around the central missouri area selling old and new gen parts!

Also look at the bottom of your thread for some more guys that are in the mite-E-lite boat with problems, You might get a hint from their threads!
