Default Looking for a mechanic, wheelwright, or collector of antique farm vehicles.

I’m a writer.

But I’m none of the things in the title of this thread.

I need to describe in my novel the details of the way a wheel is removed from a two-wheeled, horse-drawn 19th Century farm cart.

I don’t know how wheels were attached back then, so I don’t know how they came off.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Most wagons, hubs and wheels from the mid to later 1800's were on a tapered shaft and the hub was held on with a large nut that screwed on the end of the axle. The nuts had different threads. One side of the wagon had left hand threads and the other had right hand threads. This was so the nuts wouldn't screw themselves off as the wagon moved forward. Of course, if you backed it primarily I guess you could loose all 4 wheels.
