Unhappy sa200 welding red hot

I have a late 50's or early 60's sa200.I have gotten it running really good. Now my problem is that when I strike a arc I get uncontrolled heat the range is set at min and the fine is set at 0 and Im still blowing through drill pipe with little effort.I changed the fine tune and it is still doing it.Guess I know why the guy gave it to me.Any help would be great thanks.

I own one and never had that problem. I would say to look on the back side of the handle on the left and see if by chance it isnt catching 2 sets of contacts. Mine is old and sometimes it comes plum loose and you have to shut her down and get a screwdriver and work it back in there. Best of luck.

Check switches as said and if anything is arcing, cracked or bad insulation inside generator. Make sure all the brushes are good, loose in holders and making good contact or not worn. Your high idle should be no more than 1550 rpms, under load load high idle 1450 rpm and low idle 900 to 1000 rpm. IM-127, IM-179G & IM-277 may help if need to set the rpms down more. Keep the OCV setting around 88 - 93.
