It depends on where you are going to set the generator in relation to the fuel supply and whether you set-up for liquid or vapor withdrawal. From you location you can most likely use vapor withdrawal.

I still see many EK's up here, they are all liquid systems. But, maybe there in SC if you have a big enough tank and piping, it would probably be OK.
You would just have to adjust the fuel mixture with the big screw on the top side of the carb, just behind the air filter. Adjust for highest vacuum with a vacuum gage attached to a vacuum port that sees manifold vacuum.

LP liquid or vapor?

What size tank do you have or plan to use?

Won't need to do anything to the engine and probably just minor changes to the fuel system.

Default Onan 30EK - Converting from Natural Gas to LP

Thanks Gunny,

I plan on using a 300 Gal Propane tank. I have talked to 3 propane companies an they haven't got a clue how to help me. So it is possible to take an existing 30.0EK set up for Natural gas and run it with LP. Is a standard tank regulator used and what other adjustments/ changes would I need to do? Thanks in advance!

I believe Vapor Withdrawal and the tank will be about 15' from the genset. Thanks for the help.

I'd use a regulator at the tank to drop the pressure down to 5 psi, run your line to the genset and use another regulator there to drop pressure to 11" wc. Turn the maxitrol regulator over, take the spring out and you're good to go. Will depend on the length of line between the tank and the generator as to the size, larger is better, 3/4" copper will probably be OK.

One of the gas smart guys will be by shortly with the numbers.

LP gas is much denser and has a higher BUT rating then NAT gas. For this reason you will need a smaller gas jet. NAT is delivered from the meter at 3 to 5 inches of water column (far less the 1 psi) and LP is normally regulated at 7 to 10 psi, so you will also have to fiddle with the pressure regulation too. Try to contact some home generator dealers and see if they can get you a kit to convert it.

A word of warning… LP gas is heavier then air and will settle to the floor like gasoline fumes. Do your testing in a well ventilated area. Please.

Sorry I can't give any spacifics rite now but I'll look at this a bit more.

If all else failes try a place like this:

The IMPCO carburetor used on the Ford engine will handle both natural gas and LP vapor which should be delivered at similar pressure. 10psi LPG regulators are usually used at the tank for longer lines connecting to a low pressure regulator at the point of use.

There are no changeable orifices in the IMPCO carburetor that I am aware of. I have rebuilt many of these over the years with a kit from IMPCO that includes the diaphragm and "valve" which works up and down in the bore of the carb and meters gas in response to air flow. There are adjustments for both load and idle mixtures that may need tweaking to change from NG to LP.

Thank you for setting me straight... I shall remember this.
I looked up this unit and found it was a larger one then I thought. Sorry for the confusion.

Okay, I picked up the 30 EK and was able to take a gas grill tank and gas grill regulator, hook it up to the generator and it fired and ran great. I made no adjustments and have run it for 15 minutes straight to test it. Making voltage, Oil pressure is great temp is great and this thing sound great even without a muffler! So far so Good! I would like to get a 300 gal tank and regulator and hook it up the same way. Any problems? Do I need to have a solenoid to turn on and off the LPG or can it just be done manually?

Also , I need 2 vibration isolators for the top of the panel box on the genny? Part Number
402-0527 - any ideas?

You will need a solenoid.

You can get those vibration isolators at WWGrainger, been a while but think that you might even be able to get them from NAPA.

I'll look when I have the chance and see if I have the Onan application manual that will probably answer all of your present and future questions.
