Default Corn Cutter

Just ran into this. Its a horse-drawn corn cutter, or so I'm told. Anyone have anymore information on what it was and how it was used? The pictures show it upside down. the back wheels are with it, but not on it. I can pick it up cheap, but wanted to know more about it.

Looks like an old riding corn cutter, but it's missimg the two seats and the seat stands. I guess it's good for the steel wheels.

Heck, the seats might be in the pile too. How are the knives?
They are protected by the wood strips on the edges. Nice find!
If you don't want it, someone else does

You can always fabricate the seat stand and seats..... Wait...
I saw two of those seats at the Rock River Thresheree on a wagon in the flea market. He's there every year. I'll try to track his name down.

The corn cutter at the Sandwich Fair is mine. It is a early Dain and I have the later Dain's also. Dain Mfg was taken over by the John Deere Co. Your picture looks like a Dain. It may say " Dain's Safety Corn Cutter " on the casting by the front wheel. I have the booklet showing both Dain corn cutters and explaining them.

Yes, it says Dain's Safety Steel Corn Cutter on the orbit behind the front wheel. It probably was "Safe" in name only.

Is there some-kind-of bracket that "hitched" to the front wheel? It has knobs that something was hooked to above the front wheel. Could you send me a copy of the blooklet you have? I'm told it was pulled by a single horse.

I have copies of two different bookletts. I have the John Deere parts catalog showing both of the corn cutters with dates in it. I can send you pictures of my corn cutters. I have two for parts. The horse hitch poles hook to the two knobs that you are refering to. It is pulled by one horse. The horse would walk in the corn the row and cutter would cut two rows of corn at one time. There is two seats on the cutter and two men would ride on the cutter to catch and bundle the corn as it was cut.

Yes, I would like to see your pictures. I would like to know what one would look like with two seats. You can send them to sjerden@kaskaskia.edu

Thanks
