I've never had any pto driven implements for my 40..Dad sold the farm a couple yrs back and i put my 40 in my cousin's barn ..no storage here ..to many hit-miss..LOL...He's been useing it off and on..back blade and such..he called this morning wanting to know if i had a pto shaft 30-32" long..guess his son in law brought us a 48" 3 point bushhog up from ky..I'm wondering if it don't need a override clutch..then figure out pto shaft lenght?? any ideas??...B,

Overrunning clutches are expensive.
Unless you are working in tight quarters and can't think ahead....... .......you can get along with one.A four footer won't have the inertia a five footer would have.

I do know if a 40 has "Live Power" I know the 50's and the 60's did. If the tractor has live power you do not need the over running clutch. We have one on my Father-in-Law's MT.

Spend the money on the over-running clutch. It will be the SAFEST way to operate the machine.

Byron, Spend the money on and over ride clutch. You won't be sorry you did. It will be he best money you ever spent. As H Burk said. always watch where you are going and ALWAYS LEAVE YOURSELF A PLACE TO GOOD. More people has ben killed on a small tractor with a bushhog than any other equipment. I have a 2000 Ford tractor and I use a oride clutch with it. My 2 cents worth. Joe

Like the others said, no need for an overrunning clutch if you have a live pto. If you don't have a live pto another advantage to an overrunning clutch is being able to shift from forward to reverse without waiting for the blades to completely stop. My Farmall H doesn't have overrunning clutch, so to shift gears you must wait for the mower to stop spinning as it is also turning the trans. My Allis C has a overrunning clutch that also converts a 1 1/8 pto shaft to standard 1 3/8 shaft. On the Allis I can stop and change gears while the clutch just freewheels and resume mowing. Not a big thing but definitely a convienice.
