Default Can antique wood columns be cleaned up in a metal lathe?

I got 8- 5' long by 11" diameter tapered porch columns that PO messed up with a grinder/sander. there are solid with a hole bored thru lengthwise. i can't find anyone with wood lathe or that experience to answer. looks to me that a 1/8" max should be taken off. see pics. thanks.

mschreiber,

I use my lathe and mill frequently for wood projects, works great, and I have found the wood chips and dust actually help clean up the old oil and debris on the machines. A good going over with a shop vac and some fresh oil on the moving parts and I'm off and running on metal again.
