The mag model number will be stamped on one of the square bosses. Not the long serial number but a number that will look like:

FM J1B2 or something very similar. That number I wrote is code for a Fairbanks Morse Type J magneto for a 1 cylinder engine using a flange mounting and built to put on a Fairbanks engine.

Take the cap of and follow instructions for cleaning the points that you can find in old threads by searching this site for clean point or cleaning points, etc.

Learning the search feature on here is a huge bonus that will uptick one's ability to exploit the information already discussed. You seem up to it.

FM-J1 also was later FM-X1

http://www.oldengine.org/members/die.../PetrolMag.htm

Coil will be same for both R2477C and condenser same AXMR2433 or SXY2433 (NAPA FM200) but points are different and will depend on if it is CW or CCW drive rotation. Cap and gasket same.

Ok got it tore off today. I am finding that this mag appears to be a X1B2 Tell me if i'm close or way off. There's lots of other numbers stamped into the case all over it. like a few dates i believe. Tell me i'm close and i can still get parts for this beast. Thanks =John

Chances are that you won't need any parts, just a good cleaning of the points. Learn the search feature on this site. I've got blisters on my fingers from typing the same stuff over and over again.

Now you will also have to learn to time your magneto also. It is easy if you follow the instructions in the booklet you need to get. I can't remember the details.

Clean the points. Clean the points, and then clean the points. Search for : points cleaning Fairbanks

Your magneto should pop at least a 1/4" spark in open air or you're not gonna be happy. When you are happy with it, make sure you have a decent gasket on the cap. Don't be too surprised if you get the magneto working and then it falters down the road. Likely culprit: debris floating around inside the mag that wasn't removed. When the first microparticle gets between the points, no spark.

No biggie. Clean the points again.

Absolute clean points is words applicable here.

Click on the sponsors page and browse through the various "business cards" to see what is offered. Hit and Miss Enterprises is one that comes to mind. Other folks can suggest other places to get a pamphlet.

I think I bought mine on eBay but if you shop there, don't go over opening bid for a reprint. There are plenty of them out there so it makes no sense to get into a bidding war. You will probably have to buy one that is for a ZC 3 horse because that is one of the major names for what you have. 3 horse self-oiling and ZC 52 are names that come up. I think most any of these pamphlets or instructions will have what you need.

Not to post anything at the exclusion of other sponsors but if you go to Hit & Miss Enterprises' website, you can scan what they have to offer for spare parts, literature, etc. You don't have to buy anything and can still get a little education.

I think I recall that your magneto gear and the cam timing gear will each have a mark or two. To re-install, you take the breather cover off the opposite side of the place where the magneto bolts on, turn the engine until the mark(s) on the timing gear are visible and straight up and then fit the magneto into place so that the magneto gear and timing gear marks are meshed correctly. This will either be a marked tooth on one gear meshes in between two marked teeth on the other gear or that a marked tooth on one gear meshes with a marked root on the other gear. Then re-install the breather parts. Nothing to it, provided that your cam gear and crank gear are properly meshed on their marked teeth.

I bought a real nice ZC, meshed the mag and cam gears properly only to find out that I had a busted governor bracket that wasn't meshed properly. It was the first and only time I decided to just install a mag and go for it. I flipped the flywheels and it fired out the carb inlet. Oooooops

Off came the crankcase cover to check the cam gear timing ( the cam gear is a part of the governor bracket assembly or visa versa, depending on what you call things) where I found the busted governor bracket. These are pot-metal and are easy to break. Anyway....I bought a pair of parts engines in hopes that at least one would have a good bracket.

This led to buying a third engine and now I have a basement full of stuff. Several of my engines are really pretty nice but I think you've got a wa-a-a-y nicer and more collectable set-up.

It was common to see some shops or companies stamp dates or other ID on their mags when purchased or repaired. FM didn't stamp all those dates on there. Parts are still available new for FM X mags. Coils, points, condenser, gaskets, seals & other parts many same for FM X 1,2 & 4 cylinder. Most any competent auto supply should have or be able to order points or condenser or be able to get them. FM-X1B2 or with suffix A,C, or E are CW drive rotation using A2437A points. FM-X1B2B, D & G are CCW rotation using B2437A points. All those will use AXMR2433 or SXY2433 condenser or NAPA FM200 condenser. PM me here and I can send you a parts & repair list or parts info for the mag. As said other sponsors listed on this site have engine booklets. R2477C coil.
