Default MF 135 generator problems

own a MF 135 gas with a delco remy gen on it. it has 2 wires coming off the back. when the tractor is running I'm showing no voltage from either post but I'm showing voltage at the voltage regulator. whats the normal cost of having one rebuilt or should I be looking to maybe updating with a alt. instead and how do you wire it in. can you use a single post alt. or do you have to use one with 2 posts.

Your generator should have to terminals. One marked "F" and one marked A. The regulator should have three terminals two marked as above and one marked "B". The B terminal is connected to the battery, sometimes through a Amp Meter. The "B" terminal will show battery voltage whether the generator is charging or not. The "A" ,armature terminal is the output of the generator to the Voltage Regulator. The "F", Field terminal is how the voltage regulator controls the generator. The FIRST thing you want to do is, with the tractor running at high idle, take a jumper wire and connect from the "F" to the body of the generator. There may be some sparks but they will not hurt you. Does the generator start charging. If so you need a new regulator or the regulator is not grounded well. If the generator does not start charging you have a bad generator.
On slow speed engines like a tractor, the one wire alternator some times DO NOT charge well. I would use the three wire Delco alternator if you up grade to an alternator. I have done this on several pieces of farm equipment. Looking at the back of a three wire Delco alternator, The terminal marked BAT will be connected to the wire that is connected to BAT terminal of the generator's voltage regulator. When doing a conversion I normally use the wire that was on the "A" to lengthen the BAT wire so it will reach the alternator mounting point. The 1/4 inch flat terminal to the right of the BAT. terminal, this is one of the two terminals of the alternators internal regulator, is connected through a diode to Switched 12 volts from the ignition switch. The end of the diode with the band must be connected to the alternator. If you do not use a diode you will not be able to kill the tractor with the ignition switch once the tractor is running. The next 1/4 inch terminal to the right, this is the second terminal of the alternators internal regulator need s to be connected to UNSWITCH 12 volts. Many people connect this wire to the BAT. terminal of the alternator. I do not like to do this. I like to connect this terminal directly to the positive side of the battery at either the starter solenoid or the battery it self. It has to do with voltage drops in the wire from the BAT terminal on the alternator to the positive side of the battery. If you buy the plug for the alternator from a parts store the wire connected to the ignition switch will be white and the wire that connects to the battery will be red. CLEAR AS MUD YES

thanks for the info checked it out gen is bad I'm taking the gen to a alt shop tomorrow to have it checked out and rebuilt if its not to much. I'm really partial to keeping things original I've got a 40s model 9N that I've put back original. thanks again
