Default Square stock

I was wondering if there is a safe and accurate way to chuck up a peice of square stock in a 3 jaw chuck? Need to turn a small peice about 1" in diameter.

Thumbs up Re: Square stock

Make your sleeve with at least 1/4-3/8 wall thickness so you can tighten the 3-jaw securely without distorting it. 1/2 inch thick would be better yet.

Bore it so your square stock barely fits in on the points and then take a light cleanup pass on the OD before you take it out of the chuck to make sure it's concentric to the ID if you want your square stock to run true. If the piece of round stock is already cut to length so you can't bore & turn in one setting, then take a punch and put an alignment mark at jaw #1 so you can get it back in the same alignment every time.

If you have .005 runout in your chuck and you rotate the sleeve 1/2 a turn from where you bored it you will end up with .010 runout in your square stock !

Get a four jaw chuck. In the long run you will be glad you did.
