Engine serial number should be on a metal tag on top of the rocker box cover . If it is not there check block deck just in front of the forward head

It should be stamped on the right side around 1 foot from the rear of engine block and 6 to 8 inches down from where the head bolts on you will need A wire brush to brush off the side of the block it can be hard to find at times. There could be a tag back there to. good luck.

Spet more time looking and still nothing. I did fine the block casting # behind the water pump 8N9265. But still no serial#. I guess that Hot engine and salty roadways have taken a toll on the serial#. Thanks to ALL! j.r.

3406B REMAN ENGINE 7XC
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 2EK
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 3ZJ
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 4CK
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 4MG
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 5KJ
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 5YG
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 7FB
3406B TRUCK ENGINE 8TC
These are all the prefixs of 3406B serial #s. I would suggest taking brake clean to the engine block to remove dirt and grease. The serial # plate should be on the drivers side, on a flat spot about 2"x4". If you see the flat spot and no plate It might have been removed. Also you might try cross referencing the trucks serial #.

Question Re: Location of Serial# on Cat 3406B?

Thanks to All, No Tags any place on the engine. Cat said that with the block casting # it should be a 7FB****. The original engine was a 7FB****. But it had been replaced sometime back. Cat also said that the serial # should be stamped on the Left side to the rear down about 10'' from the top of the deck. This is where most of the rust is on the side of the block. I have steamed cleaned the engine, and it could be used to eat dinner on. Cat also said that the serial# isn't stamped anyplace else that they know of??? I have looked at several trucks with 3406b's in them 7FB & 4MG in them and they are stamped on the Left side back. Some had tags and some didn't. Again Thanks for All The HELP!!! I need it! J.R.

What, did you need the ser.# for? The prefix you have will give you general specs, but other than the exact build sheet, it wouldnt give you much else.
