I have a friend that has had a VW garage for over 30 years, I thought I saw all the great VW tricks...............................I was wrong.
I'll have to pass this on to him. Jim |

Wouldn't he still have to adjust the belt tension if he actualy put a new belt on?

That's not a WHOLE lot different than moving the belt on a set of step pulleys........

How many time will he be able to do that without injury? Would you take that risk? What happens if that screwdriver decides to come flying out of there like an angry dagger?
Would your mother say "...You're going to put an eye out like that!..." She'd be right! I once had a VW with a tempermental starter. Found that if I had someone hold the key in the Start position, I could give the generator pulley a little nudge and it would crank over. This was all good until I got a finger in the belt one time. The final toll - Broke the tip of my index finger. The X-ray looked like a pencil with the end of the lead broken off. I got a new starter very shortly after that. |

just my observation,I think he put the same belt back on,a different belt and the tension would be different. You adjust them belt's by taking off the gen pully and changing the shim's.Like it say's just a "trick",and a dangerous one at that!!

The belt looked rather loose.

A tight belt surly would have put that driver thru his head. A friend tried that, many years ago, and the generator pully bent. The belt took the driver out of his hand, and after several revolutions, sent it thru the hood and onto the roof of his house. By the way, broke 3 fingers on the first turn
, and his wrist on the second . The third was the charm, it got launched!![]() Andrew |
