Default John Deere L Resurrection

Howdy! Project L is moving faster than I thought and I have a few questions.

Are there common "problems" or "quirks" i should look out for on these tractors?

What is the easiest way to time the Magneto?

Can someone share some info on the lubricant used in a '39 L?

Are the only fluids in the tranny and engine? And what weight does it take?

Anyone have a good source for 6x22in tires?

I would take a look at the old girl but she is a few states away. The magneto shop fixed my mag early and I'd like to get the tractor running next time i see it. Whoever used it before me took outstanding care of it, no sheet metal is rotted or has anything more than very light surface rust, and the inside of the gas tank is almost spotless. All it needs are tires and the tube to connect the air filter to the carb and some paint! I cant wait to bring it to life!

Call the John Service Center at Moline, IL, and order both the owners manual and parts book or order here: http://www.johndeere.com/en_US/ag/se...ure/index.html

The magneto is a LITTLE tricky as two helical gears are involved and you have to kind of "twist" the magneto as you install it.

One quirk both the Hercules and John Deere engines have is leaking oil. The was a tip about that in yet another publication but that didn't work either........
