Default An alarming question..

Here is a question for you all. One that shouldn't have any political implications, but since every single thread on s f and g goes that direction I am not holding my breath...

What is your theory on the proper placement on alarm clocks? Close enough that you can reach right over and hit the off (or snooze) button, or far enough away that you HAVE to get up and take a few steps to turn the alarm off, thus ensuring that you are really, really awake?

I think it depends on your lifestyle...if you need to get up for school, work or an appointment, it should be set farther away so that you have to get up to shut it off. If you're retired or just don't give a rat's ass, then it should be close so you can just shut it off......or reach over & throw it against the wall & then go buy a new one!!!

I used to have one. They are ancient torture devices.
Now if you REALLY want to stir up a hornet's nest of controversy, get a discussion started about whether the toilet paper should hang over the top of the roll or behind it.......

For me, within reach is quite sufficient. I'm such a light sleeper that once awakened, I'm up.
For my roommate in college, across the quad probably wouldn't have been far enough. He crawled out of the top bunk, walked across the room, turned off his alarm clock, climbed back into the top bunk, then blamed me because I didn't wake him up for his 11AM final.

For me when I was younger it had to be a few feet away.. I was very hard to wake up! Now that I'm older my Timex watch alarm almost always dose the job.

Quick story: My parents were going on winter vacation and I was 16. I was worried about getting up for school. I bought a good light timer and pluged in a 12 volt power supply and wired in a back up beeper from a box of auction stuff.. I believe it said 90 db That sucker was placed on the dresser across the room and would wake the near dead !! I was never late the whole time.

I am a very deep sleeper. If I wasn't breathing, someone would probably toe-tag me. I have been known to set 3 separate alarms, staggered about a minute apart, in order to wake myself up. I sleep in the upper bunk of a bunk bed, so to shut off the alarm I have to get out of bed without falling, stand up, walk across the room, and then shut off the alarm. Assuming I actually manage to make it out of my room without falling back to sleep, I have been known to fall asleep on the guest bed downstairs. Or on the bathroom floor (surprisingly comfortable when you want to go back to sleep). The couch in my room has a nearly magnetic pull.

Despite setting 3 alarms, On very rare occasion I have woken up 3 hours later, with no memory of waking up and shutting off the alarms.

Yes, I am a deep sleeper.

Don't matter to me, I sleep through them, plus if I did hear one the forty four has a pretty good range.

My alarm is next to the bed and has 2 seperate settings, I set them 5 min apart incase I dont get up. I never have used snooze I figure its a habit I dont need to get into. On a side note a buddy of mine in high school never wanted to get up, so his mom kept a cup of marbles in the freezer, after the second warning to get up, she poured them in bed He said there was no getting away from them without getting up.

My wife puts the tab behind the roll, I put the tab in front. Neither of us gives the other one hell, so I guess it doesn't matter.

0.5 K, As regards to placement, do you mean LEFT or RIGHT. (and you worried about it going political) My cell phone goes off after about the second cup of coffee. Not to wake me up, but to let me know that I should be going.

Just don't put the TP on the roll, just set it on top of the pile of engine/tractor magazines stacked up in front of the commode where the bookshelf fell apart, and there's no arguments!
Mike M

On the alarm, I have mine clear across the room!

We use the TV as the alarm. It's set to the weather channel

The TP goes on the back of the toilet. If we put it on the hanger, the dog eats it.

The ONLY alarm clock I've had my entire life that wakes me is one that LOOKS like a steam locomotive.
The ALARM sounds like a steam engine leaving the train station, whistle and bell going while chugging away.......
This is the one (I hope the hotlink from Amazon works)

Well.........maaaaaybe once I shut it off in my sleep........

I haven't used an alarm clock in over 25 years. I HATE THEM! I always used to wake up just before they went off, and shut them off so I wouldn't hear that awful racket. When the last one broke, I realized I didn't need one at all. I've never been late for work (or and engine show) yet.
An old well driller told me once that if you are concerned about not getting up on time, just drink 2 or 3 big glasses of water before you go to bed. You'll get up!

Alan
