Default B&S Gen Power 10 hp generator.

Gentlemen,
I bought this generator new about 8 years ago. Did Briggs & Stratton use any cheap, fast wearing plastic parts inside this engine? Its Model # is 19E412, Type 1131E1, Code 980420YD. Thanks for checking.

Model 19 flat head, Should have an iron cam. Some parts for that engine are NLA. No "plastic" internals as far as I know.

I dont think they started that cheap plastic crap ti'll the late 80's and into the 90's to today. Only thing "plastic like" you'll find on the oldy's are insolators for the ignition system and even that is mica or bakelite.

Engine Code 980420YD tells me it was made April 20, 1998. New enough to at least have a plastic cam gear.

Besides the info John has given you, that late an engine may also have a plastic governor gear and flyweight assembly. They tend to self destruct after a while, lending to uncontrolled engine speed. Use a diesel rated oil instead of the 'energy saving' oil. The new oils are hell on the cam lobes. Check your oil level every time you fill the gas tank. These engines use oil, even though you do not see it going out the exhaust. Low oil is the biggest cause of cam and con rod failures in these engines.

Not sure the 19's ever went to the plastic cam gear, but the gov gear could be. I personally wouldnt sweat the oil, the stresses on the cam are so low on these engines that the anti scuff additives do no good anyway. In fact the newer oils will be cleaner burning better in the long run.

Thanks for all the replies. After changing the cam chain and sprockets on an older automotive V8 with a nylon covered cam gear that cracked and chip apart from age I said I would never knowingly buy an engine with nylon parts in it. I can tell you this, if this engine ever fails because of an internal plastic part I'll never buy another Briggs & Stratton powered product again. Jim...

Jim,
I wouldnt worry about it. Besides, dang near every engine made now has some non-metallic parts in it, and the materials have changed a LOT over the years. Now 100 years from now........well those parts will probably not be so good, but thats todays throw away society. People wanted fast food engines, now they got them.

It will definitely have the plastic governaor gear. It has been used for YEARS. It Might have the plastic covered cam abe gear. The easiest way to tell is take the number to a Briggs dealer and ask to see a new camshaft, if they have one in stock.
