I HAVE A ONAN 6.5 GENERATOR IN MY RV. MODEL NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER 6.5NH-3CR/16004P. IT IS IN A 1985 CHEVY SUNCHASER MOTOR HOME.. I HAVE IT OUT FOR REPAIR.. IT WILL NOT TURN OVER.. IF YOU JUMP THE CELONOID IT WILL TURN OVER AND YOU HAVE TO GET FIRE TO THE COIL... THIS IS MY FIRST ONE TO WORK ON AND I AM TRYING TRIAL AND ERROR... I HOPE I ANSWERED ALL THE REQUIRED THINGS IN MY OPENING. I READ THE PLATE AS BEST I COULD.. I GOT CUMMINGS SOUTH TO TELL ME IT WAS PARTS BOOK 940-0360 AND SERVICE MANUEL 900-0337. I DUNNO IF THAT IS CORRECT... I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE PLUG ON THE SIDE DOES... DOES IT ACTIVATE THE FUEL PUMP AND SWITCH...OR HOW DOES THIS WORK... I AM INTERESTED IN SELLING IT EVENTUALLY BT WANT TO CHECK IT OUT FIRST TO TELL ALL I KNOW AND BE TRUTHFUL. ALL THE WIRES LOOK GOOD AND IT CAN BE TURNED BY HAND SO I KNOW THE MOTOR IS FREE. WHEN I HAD IT TURNING OVER THE POINTS FIRED AND SO DID THE PLUGS... SOMEONE GIVE ME A STARTING POINT. YOU CAN EMAIL GSP974@HOTMAIL.COM .... NEED ANY INFO OWNERS MANUEL OR SERVICE MANUEL ETC... The most common problem is bad start solenoid. You need to have the correct one. Sometimes people will buy one from a parts house that is wrong. They look just like Ford units but they are not. The one for yours is a 307-1617. The number should be on the back side of the solenoid. The white plug on the side is for a remote start control.

The engine requires fuel, air, and spark in order to run. If you have spark and air, you may have a fuel problem. You probably have an electric fuel pump - make sure it is running AND pumping (had one once that ran fine, but pumped nothing - a good cleaning fixed that - gummed-up check valves). There also may be a fuel cutoff solenoid in the fuel line - make sure it is opening. All this should be covered in the service manual. First thing is to get it to turn over, then make sure it has fuel, air, and spark.
If the unit has sat up for any length of time, the fuel can gum up the carb, fuel pump, etc. If your unit has a downdraft carb, you have to remove the intake manifold to get to the bolts that hold the carb to the manifold, so you can get the carb off to clean it. None of this is a lot of fun to do, but it's not too difficult if you have a bit of mechanical experience.
The service manual that has been provided to you has a wealth of information, but it is intended for use by someone who is experienced with mechanical/electrical service procedures. Don't start taking things apart until you have done some diagnosis so as to know what to take apart.

The green paint seems to have addictive qualities.

We forgot to warn you first...
