I have a 2-1/4 hp stationary engine that I would like to know the make of. It has a tag on the top that lists a serial number, RPM of 600, and 2-1/4 hp. I have been searching for a long time to find one that matches it without success. It resembles the Jaeger, economy, and Arco types but there are differences that do not allow a perfect match. Does anyone know anything about this engine? Please refer to the attached pics.

Hercules made it for who I don't know. Maybe it is a mix of models. If you give the serial # we should be able to give a date and model.

Hello vernOn, Thanks for the help. The "Engine #" is 346425. I might add that there is an "S" after the H.P. 2-1/4. I have a number of questions, once it is identified, which I will post in the forum.
Thanks |

Hello,
I'd say it could be any of the 3 brands you called out. It is definitely made by Hercules. Some of the engines that came from Hercules where a mix match of parts, depending on what parts where available at the time. Also you have to remember, alot of the parts where interchangeable so it wouldn't be strange to see parts that where put on after the engine left the factory, by the owner or even a service dealer, just to keep the engine going. It's a Economy block for sure. Thanks! Richard |

It is a Hercules model S. They were a little different from other Hercules engines in that the main bearings were set flat rather than angled, and I believe that the valves were oriented differently also.

Thank you all for your comments and assistance.
I have I found two engines linked to this site which appear to match my engine. I have added the links. One is the "Arco" and the other is the Hercules "H" model. Is there a diference? I looked at some pics of "S" models and they all appear to have a curved slope to the casting below the cylinder. they also have the fuel fill on the spark plug side of the casting. Mine is in the front. Hercules model "H" of Gene McGabe http://www.herculesengines.com/hercules/herc_pics.html Arco of Val Esplin http://www.herculesengines.com/hercu...ands_pics.html |

For some reason Hercules put very little information on the brass tags on the engines they built, not even their name, but they all have the model letter following the HP. Yours is therefore an S model based on the information you have provided.
