This is a 5 HP unit with a two belt system, one for forward one for reverse. I have the forward belt working OK but need the routing diagram for the reverse belt.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Don't know about your specific tiller but two common ways to reverse. 1. Cam shaft extends through block and turns opposite crank. 2. Reverse belt ran on pulley on crank. Normally crank reverse pulley was smaller than forward pulley and/or reverse pulley on gearcase was larger than forward pulley and belt was run with a twist to reverse. Ken

Post a picture of the drive system of your tiller.

There is only the crankshaft pully sticking out of the crankcase, no camshaft extension. I know the belt probably needs a twist, but not sure how its intended to run. Will try and post photos later, but was hoping someone would have a manual for the model.

Thanks for that Gary, it does show the routing over the reverse idler, but I'm not 100% sure about the route below the idler down to the pulley. Some clues too in the text confirm what I thought, that the flat side should face the engine pulley and the restrictor. (but I can't figure how the engine pulley drives it - the engine pulley has two V grooves and I know the flat side of the reverse pulley won't/shouldn't ride in the V groove.)

Having an awful time with photos - will try putting some in a photobucket site and will provide a link.

Thanks for all the help so far - some good clues.

Here's a link to some pix on Photobucket.

I have the forward belt in place, just trying to figure out the reverse one.

Thanks.

Looking at the back of the tiller:The flat of the belt goes over the top flat idler and straight down the right side, under the large bottom flat idler and back up the left side past the right side of the v engine pulley and on to the top flat idler. The lever engagement pushes the top flat idler to the left so the v of the belt engages with the v engine pulley. After reading that it sounds confusing but it made perfect sence as I was typing it. Anyway the belt does not surround the engine pulley but the idler just pushes the v part of the belt against the side of it. gary

OK got it Gary, the flat of the belt goes against the non-V top idler and the V of the belt at the left vertical run rests on the engine pulley V groove to drive it. The V of the belt on the right side vertical run from the top idler would be facing out to the right.

Where I'm confused is how the outward facing belt V's engage with the reverse pulley of the tiller, which has an inward facing V groove in it. (normal V pulley, not a flat pulley)

Do both vertical runs of the reverse belt twist before engaging the reverse pulley, ie the left one would twist below the engine pulley and the reverse pulley, and the right side run would twist between the top idler and the reverse pulley?

Seems like it would work, but not sure about belt life if they twist, did Yardman intend it to work that way?

Thanks for your help so far.
