Default eBay Scam

Just a warning to everyone. I know that a lot of you use eBay.

I recieved an e-mail from what appeared to be eBay. It said something to the effect of someone had corrupted my eBay account and that I needed to verify my account information. It included a link to a web site where I was suppose to go to do this verification. My wife clicked on the link, but the website would not open.

After doing some research. I think I know what was going on. There are folks out there that want to get your eBay account information so that they can do fraudulent business through eBay, using your name. They will set up a web site that will look just like eBay. As soon as you log on, they have your information. They will only keep this site running for a short period of time, then shut it down after they sucker in a few folks and before they get caught. I have reported this to eBay. They say they will investigate.

When my wife clicked on it, it had already been shut down, thank the Lord. She probably would have logged on. I can't blame her. I probably would have too.

To avoid this, never go on eBay by clicking a link in an e-mail. Always go to eBay, or any other vendor's site, by entering their address into your web browser. This will ensure that you are really on eBay, not some look alike site.

I am lucky. I probably would have fallen for it. I hope none of you get burned by this.

I while back there was a story on our local TV news about an ebay seller with thousands of feedback---all positive. Some crook was able to steel his user account and begin to sell expensive cars for cut rate prices. And if you bought one, I don't think you ever got a car.

Guy out of CIncinnati did this to my wife. THEN you find "safe harbor" is a joke. All ebay will do is give you a temporary ID with a new password, and remove any negative feedback--That's it.... If YOU want to go to wherever the creeps live, and file charges-- then they will forward whatever info from their files to the investigating officer.

Personally, I'd think they would be more worried about people fencing goods, identity theft, fraud, and all that, but they seem to just want collect fees, and not accept any responsibility.
