Question Kohler K321 ignition system

Has anyone ever replaced a magneo Ignition on a Kohler K321 with a battery Ignition system. I think my flywheel magnets are to weak to generate enough voltage so am wanting to put an automotive style coil on my motor.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Brett

Yes, I changed a K-301 in My Dad early 140 JD Lawn Tractor. All you need is a switch 12 volt source and a INTERNAL resisitor 12 Volt automotive coil. You DO NOT need a special coil from a Kohler dealer as I have seen some suggest here on the web. If your engine uses a Negative ground electrical system, you need to connect the negative side of the automotive coil to the points. Be sure to remove any of the wires from the magneto system from the coil. The ignition systems condenser is normally connected to the negatve side of the coil and mounted near the coil.

Thanks Kent,
I thought it was possible. The engine is on an old 4cm21 kohler generator and it is not getting any spark. I replaced the magneto coil, points and condensor and still nothing so I figured the magnets were weak on the flywheel.
Thanks again,
Brett

A magneto rebuilder can remagnetize flywheel magnets. I had the same problem years ago with a k181. Drove me almost crazy until I figured out what the problem was.

I believe the condenser is different on the coil set up vs the magneto, easy to get either one, though. I got the coil for my conversion from Napa.

kd hitit on the head of the nail. my k301 came with a ballast resistor and car coil when i got it. never looked to making it factory after i got the dollar amount to do so. mine is electric start only so i need 12 volts anyway. its a miller roughneck IE welder/gen 1973.

A non-resister coil and external resister works as well as a internal resistor coil. Six to one/half a dozen to the other. I was speaking of how the 12 volt battery ignition is set up stock on Kohler engines. The ONLY thing bad about the coil and resister is you have a few more connections to make that in the future might be failure points.
