Default Remove an Onan 5.0 BGA-3CR from Winnebago?

I've been offered an Onan generator 5.0 BGA-3CR/160204 that is in a Winnebago Brave motor home about to be scrapped. How do I remove the unit? Does the generator floor plan drop out? I'd like to grab this generator and set it up for home emergency use. Is it worth the effort? Looks complete and I was told it worked when parked a few years back. The motorhome is from the 80's.

From what little I have learned the R/V generators are eather Drawer units or drop out. You will have to look and see how it is installed. My advice is try and get all the wiring , and if it is set up that way get the remote start panel and as much of its wiring also. Get some help as these things are compact and heavy. If it is a drop out unit you will need a good jack to lift it up while you unfasten the mounts. If it looks to be in good shape, and someone is giving it to you it is definately worth the effort. They can be mounted on a good garden wagon and a box built around them for quiet running. If the muffler is good grab it also, you'll need it too. Good luck on your great find and keep us posted . thanks BB.

By all means grab it! As BB said if it is free even better. Get any manual that might be in the RV about the Generator (long shot I know, but if you do not look…)
And you are looking at a 5KW, 60 hertz, 120/240 volt, single phase generator.
Great score, get it before they find out what they are giving away.

Thanks for the quick response. It appears to have two 110v plugs. Can I wire it for a 240v well pump? Looks complete and about 300 lbs. The jack is a good idea. Gregg

Yes to the well pump assuming of course it is not too big for the generator, most residential well pumps would work fine on a 5KW onan, the -3C voltage code means it supports 120/240

It's taken a year to get owner to agree to scrap the RV and let me have the generator. I'm supposed to grab it tomorrow and then the restoration will begin. The RV is filled with junk and I'm hoping to grab the remote start and muffler too. Our plan is to use a bob cat with forks to place under the pan and then cut the 4 bolts off after removing the fuel line, wiring and exhaust.

It is a good find. Most RV gen sets have very little run time on them. Onan gen set were bult to last. I work at Onan in Huntsville Alabama for 23 years.

Mice LOVE generators!!!
They build homes or condos in them!
Once you have possession on this unit clean it inspect it and with the help of the guys of this board you will have a great unit.

Remember post a full make model and serial number then the resident smart guys can give you any advice and PDF manuals.

As has been posted before get everything you can that is associated with this unit.

I bought a 6.5 kw verson of that genset that had been removed from a motorhome with a cutting torch.
On this one, there is a piece of channel that runs from front to back and they simply cut all the wires and cut that channel off at both ends in a handy spot.

Like others have said. Try to acquire as much of the original wiring as possible; if not the complete loom at least mark and save the connectors.

Thanks for the advice. My hope is that the mice moved into the vacant camper and decided to leave the generator alone. Nothing makes a bigger mess than these critters. The original owner of the camper seemed to take decent care of it and even repainted the generator some years back. We may cut out the generator door area and then the four bolts holding the floor pan and lower/lide the unit out. I'll then trace the harness back to the control panel and remove the controls. Sounds like a good plan on paper at least!

Took a few hours and the bobcat but I got the generator out of the camper. Had to cut the front of the camper wall near the generator and then 6 bolts holding the pan up. Could not get far enough into th camper to save the internal controls or find any paperwork. Got the unit home, slid onto a picnic table to look at it and the table collapsed just as my wife pulled into the driveway! I've since put it on a furniture dolly and slid into the shed. Last night, I changed the oil, looked at the plugs, hooked up an outboard gas tank and she cranked right over and fired up. I had to cut the muffler off and need to reattach it. She generates power but is running a bit rough. Looks like the carb is leaking gas and has been for a few years based on the grime on the manifold. Is a carb rebuild really $70 for the kit? I will post some photos later this morning. I'm inspired with the restorations photos already posted on the site. Who do you suggest for the carb rebuild kits?

If you are real carefull when you pull the carb apart, you can reuse the top gasket. The carb probably does not need any parts, just a cleaning. I am cheap so always try the cheap route (sometimes not the best) first. If that fails, its time for a kit.

Notice some of the cooling shroud is missing. Don't run it too long.

I took the side shroud off to clean the dust off and got another piece that I don't know where it goes. It's as wide as the top. Will need to post a photo of the mystery tin next.

If it is the same width as the top, I will guess it is a front heat sheild that goes on the front, covering the exhaust.

Thanks for response. Indeed it fits over the pipe off the manifold. Got the $60 carb kit today and am looking in the box for my change! Will try and finish the rebuild this weekend and see if it improves the shaking of the twin cylinders. If not, do I need to check the valves?
