Default Another engine out of the wild

I brought home another engine out of the wild yesterday. It is very similiar to the Spence that I have been working on but is the prediseser to it. The tag reads

Spence, Smith, and Koontz

Machinist & Boiler Makers

6 HP engine # 202

Parkersburg, WVA

The main differences between the Spence I just did and this one is that it is a tad smaller and it has a round connecting rod.

I found this engine in a brush pile a couple of years ago where they had dragged it or pushed it down off the hill and it was laying there on its side and the only thing sticking out of the briars was the arm for the shackle line to hook to. It took me two years to find the owner and to buy it off of him but once I got it on the trailer I started to look it over and the valves were both loose by just pushing them in with my hand and once I got it home I loosened the bearings alittle and oiled everything and then put my foot in the flywheel and it turned. Hard to believe that everything was in great shape, I thought it was going to be a major restoration but it is starting to look like it just needs to be cleaned up.

Does anyone have any info on this company or have one?

Thanks Tom Winland Ohio

Tom, I live up in the semi-rural northeastern part of Ohio and never had any luck finding these treasures. Where do you live so I can relocate to your neck of the woods!!!

Just kidding.

Hey Tom, when can we see pictures of your find. It sounds interesting. While once in a while you can find them, but anyhow they are getting scarce. Dick in the beautiful Finger Lakes on NY.

Dick, Your surrounded with this stuff ! How about that big pumper "near your backyard" ! If it wasn't for the cold, I'd relocate to NY myself. I can't count the number of trips I've made over your way to pick up stuff this summer. Made some good friends too !

Tom, Sometime when I'm down that way you need to show me the tune you play on your flute that makes those old engines come out of hideing for you! Randy Hart Ohio

Kevin what kind of engine is that? I have never seen a water hopper like that. I have heard of some engines lurking in the woods nearby, I need to go hunting.

That will be a nice photo in the book once the engine is up and running.

And this is today. I now have the correct induction tube and mag bracket and when Ted finishes the Webster it will be complete.
