On November 19, 2010 I made a trip to the foundry in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to pick up various parts for the Big 4 tractor. In this picture are some of those parts: steering chain winder clamps, starting crank, two halves of the water pump, governor mount, governor adjuster, spark plug tube support and clamps, clevises, throttle casting, spark advance casting and lever, crankguard/step.

Over the past weekend I worked on a set of pistons for a Big 4 engine. I have all the lathe work done and still have to put the wrist pin hole in and machine the inside bosses.

This past weekend we worked on the master pinions that Morris had bought many years ago. We built the teeth up and remachined them for the purpose of recasting new ones.

Last Saturday we picked up the aluminum piston castings at NRB Foundry in St. Charles, MN. The attached picture shows the aluminum pistons. Also attached is a picture of the finished cast pistons, bearing caps, and wrist pins ready for Bruce Flatmoe to pick up for his Big 4.

We have started machining the flywheels on the vertical lathe this week. Attached are pictures of the cast flywheel and the lathe it is being turned down on.

Are you going to try and balance the flywheels before putting them on the crankshaft or maybe after and balance the assembly? Or do you think it won't be an issue?

My plan is to balance them as an assembly. There is a place in Owatonna Mn. (Midwest Balancing) that should be able to handle this. It probably wouldn't need to be done, but I want to be sure it is right.

That makes a lot of sense to me to do it as an assembly. It sure looks like you're doing everything else right with this engine. Very impressed with your work!

Hi Allan,
How many hours (rough estimate) do you think you will have into a complete motor? Great photos of the actual machining and finished parts! Bubbles |

Looks like I have a little 'catch up' reading to do.... as I kind of lost track of this thread for a while.
Impressive work. Thanks for providing the pictures and information. |

As far as hours, I don't even want to think about it. Just doing one step at a time. I tell everybody it will be done by the 4th of July, but i'm not giving a year.

We just got a new dealership sign made for our Big 4. It is double sided. It seems like we could be a dealership with all the various parts in our shop.

What a hell of a project! There are not many people who buy a tractor without an engine who think, O the engine I can make by myself.
When you have the right tools, you can make everything. Keep going with this fine project and the tractor will be rescued for the future. Gerrit |
