Does anyone have any idea what the first engine ever made was and around what year??

I think you need to clarify what you mean by "first engine".

This is a gas engine forum, not the steam engine forum.

Or are we stretching to mean any internal combustion engine?

Could have been the Otto engine in Germany built in 1876.

I think the first practical (the term is used loosely) internal combustion engine ever built and sold commercially was the Lenoir, in about 1862.

It was a non-compression one cylinder, double acting engine which ran on town gas.

Another interesting fact is that Lenoir was waaaaaay ahead of everyone else in that he used high tension ignition with spark plugs and a high-tension distributor.

Of course as soon as the Otto Langen engine came out, Lenoir's design fell into obscurity.

If you are really talking about a governed hit and miss engine, it would probably have been made around 1885. Probably something like an Otto with slide valve and flame ignition.

At least that's my imperfect understanding of the history or the "internal combustion" engine.

There was the Robson Cogwheel non compression engine that I think was built in 1857. I have a Coolspring power museum video of a reproduction running. I think he said Robson only built 2, one for him and one for his Father.

Wayne G will have to correct me on this but I believe the O&L at Kinzers is the first "Hit n Miss" engine because the governor locks out one of the slides or something like that.

But the Deutz/Crossley & Schleicher Schumm Ottos are the first 4 stroke hit n miss engines.
