Default John Deere Model E

I have a model E that I have taken the piston out of and cleaned up and now I have a bit of a question. Due to my lack of paying attention..... I dont know in what direction the piston goes back it. There is a groove in the piston behind the rings that goes almost half way around the piston. Does this groove go on the bottom of the cylinder or the top? and.. What is this groove for? Oil to lubricate the cylinder?

That groove is the oil slot, and it goes on top.

Also the bumps and oil hole at the end on the con rod on the gear side if you needed that information as well.

Another question.. what should I torque the head and rod taps to? Is there a spec?

No spec, Just snug them down fairly tight, the rod bolts normally use a jam nut as well to ensure nothing comes apart.

Bolt Torque Specifications

Too be safe bolts should be torque to spec.
