I came across this unusual magneto with round bar magnets. I think it might be for an early 1900's automobile. Anybody with any ideas? Thanks in advance...LarryH

I found this on Google,
HEINZE ELECTRIC COMPANY LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS DIVISION OF CONSOLIDATED ELECTRIC LAMP CO. MADE IN U.S.A. Also several years ago somebody had a windshield wiper marked Heinze Electric. That suggests an automotive parts connection. Max |

I have 2 Heinz magnetos/dynamos. One is a 6 round bar, model GM with one contact and a smooth pulley. Turning by hand puts out a nice low tension spark. Other is 4 round bar friction drive model 16 which is for flywheel engines. Very heavy well built units. Neither one are for a timed spark as in a automobile engine.

Hello John, 1918 I.H.C. trucks models F,G,H,K all had Heinze mags but this looks different. Late teen Regal, and Monitor cars used Heinze mags as well. There's a patent issued in 1922 for 1504619 for a mag just like yours. Heinze had alot of aftermarket electrical components, but I dont think they had many origional equipment installations, at least in the late teens. They started making mags and coils very early, pre '10 so this may be very early. You should run your question past the Horsless Carriage Club of America.

I have a friend who is looking for a Heinze magneto for his, I think, Standard Cream Separator Engine. I know they came in different sizes.

Keith:
I think that the knowledgeable gentlemen who feel that this is a vehicular magneto rather than a stationary engine magneto are correct...this mag seems way too large (and quite heavy) to fit any small to midsize farm engine. I sure appreciate all the help and thoughts on this magneto's possible original use. Thanks again...LarryH |

I would agree it is automotive or possibly marine. I'm guessing it is for a two cylinder engine with the two lugs for connecting wires? Keith |
