Default Injection Timing on SL1 Lister

Got a SL1 off a genset that was running @ 1800rpm I've converted it to variable speed but I'm only wanting to run it @ 900-1000 rpm on an air compressor should I be retarding the injection timing a bit and if so how

cheers in advance

Andrew

Hello E27N,
Presume your SL diesel is much like the later SR and ST etc, in which case the pump timing is set with shims under the pump body. Add shims to retard injection. Would guess that retarding by another 5 degrees would be OK. Spill timing is a bit slow and messy on Listers, so you may get away with some trial and error by loosening the pump and adding a split shim of .005" or .010" under it, and if it starts well and runs with less knock, you are OK. Be sure the pump is tightened to align with linkage so that the rack still moves freely, or it could bolt on you. Think I have manuals with timing figures for ST series at various speeds. Email or PM if these are useful, Regards, Combustor.

If I remember correctly there is no need to alter injection timing on the SL Listers for 1000 rpm but the exhaust tappet clearance has to be increased to 10 thou.

My memory isn't that good I just looked it up in the book inlet 2 thou and exhaust 6 thou below 1200 rpm and at 1000 rpm you are only going to get 2.4hp hope it is enough to drive your compressor

Hello all,
Hope my previous post didn't lead people astray. Oldgoat is correct in that the pump timing for an SL does not need to change with reduced revs. Forgot they have a pintle style injector which has a delay effect to compensate. It is also correct to set the exhaust valve to .006" cold clearance.
Later direct inject series, ST etc. varied pump timing to suit speeds above 2000 rpm only. Regards, Combustor.
