Exclamation Foam air cleaner generic replacement?

What material should be used to replace a foam rubber air filter on a small 5 hp or less engine? The correct filter is no longer available (was a foam unit) so I will need to make one from scratch. Something I can source locally would be ideal.

Thanks,
Randy AB9GO

Would NAPA or a lawn & garden store not carry a suitable replacement element? What engine air filter are you looking for?

You might try E-Bay, I have found numerous NOS items for small engines.. You might get lucky..

In Australia we have a store called Clark Rubber and they normally carry bulk supplies,if they aren't too busy they will normally shape it for you.You must have something similar over there,Norm

Post a picture of the filter next to a ruler. I may be able to help.

You can eyeball how coarse or fine the foam structure is, and it must be "open cell" to work properly. You might be able to get sheet foam from McMaster-Carr and then cut it to shape.

I've tried to find this material. I checked at local Foam stores with no luck, but then found small sheets at work from unknown sources. To check if it is suitable open cell, just blow through it to see how restrictive it is. Compare it to a new B&S foam filter for cell size and ease of blow through.

Obviously Briggs and others buy this stuff by the yard and stamp out their filters. It is probably pretty cheap if you can find it.

One type of concrete expansion joint material is an open cell foam. It typically comes in 50' rolls of varying thickness and width. 1/2" thickness and 4" to 6" width is common. Construction supply houses carry this, as well as some home centers, such as Menards. You can probably add layers to make the correct thickness. One roll would give you a lifetime supply. You may be able to buy it in smaller rolls.

I don't know if grainger will sell to just anyone if you order online. I know you need a business and account to walk in of the street and buy something. buying online might be different.
but they do have the foam for filters, see link.

Grainger usually needs a corporate tax number to process sales. try a good motorcycle shop - they usually have aftermarket filters that you can cut to size. You might try an air filter element of an older B&S engine, and cut it to fit your filter housing.
