you need 30wt for 30-100 degrees outside temp.... for those other weights just use rear end gear oil...lol

Engines DO NOT like the EP additive that is in gear oil. DO NOT put gear oil in a engine. If you want the higher weight oil you need to look to racing oil. That said good old Heavy Duty 30 will be all you need unless the generator is outside in zero degree weather. Then you might think about using a 10W-30.

Not to mention that gear oil is rated totaly ifferently than engine oil - a 75/90 gear oil is NOT the same as a 75/90 engine oil would be!

I acquired my 4.0 cck in June of 2008. I use Castrol 30 wt. I am located in deep south Texas and winter temperatures are mild. I believe 30 wt is the best for mild to very warm summer temperatures and would be the original recommended oil for these units. Others seem to use the multi-viscosity oils. I have had no problems with the straight 30 wt oils for this unit. LOL Ben

Your right. Most people don't know that they are two totally different rating systems. 90 weight gear oil has about the same viscosity as a 40 - 50 weight engine oil. Not to mention the additive package is totally differnet.

2 cycle Detroit Diesels use 40wt oil. Any truck stop will have it. NAPA has it and so does Tractor Supply Co.

Some Harley-Davidsons use 60 wt engine oil. Any Harley dealer or motorcycle shop that deals with Harley-Davidsons (and their clones) will have 60 wt. They will have 50wt. too.
