Default Hello From Central Pennsylvania

Hello folks,

I recently took ownership of a tractor my grandfather built. It is powered with a 1930 (I think) McCormick Deering 1.5 hp engine. It has not run since 1980 and no one i know has any knowledge on how to work on / restore one. My goal for this year is to clean it up a bit and if possible get it running.

On that note; does anyone have advice on books, websites, etc. for info on what I need to do?

Elk.

Elk: "Nice" project tractor . Check out my thread regarding my "GALLOWAY Tractor". It's one of those things you just have to fuss with. If it used to run, it will again. Get the engine running, figure out the drive from the engine to the transmission to the drive wheels, and clutching arrangement . Sure wish I was a lot closer to help out . A few more photos of the drive(belt or chain) arrangement would help.

As far as I know the drive chain is functional. There is a chain running from the engine to the transmission then a shaft to the rear differential. When put in gear it holds. When in neutral it rolls free. At this point I am trying to find info on making the engine start / run. I am thinking of picking up "Gas Engine Restoration" by Peter Rooke. Does anyone know if it is worth it as a reference for getting the engine functional?
