I think it wasn't in too bad a shape when dug out, went to a front yard ornament with sprinklers for a number of years. That is what did it in.

Someone indicated that there was an engine at that show that recently sold for something like $150,000. Is that just a rumor or was that a real live deal with a real engine? Never did see or hear of an engine costing that much...saw an auction result a couple of years ago with a tractor that brought over $300,000....recession...what recession?

Don't care who owns it or what the circumstances were just to either put the rumor to bed or confirm that engines can sell for that much in this economy.

The Schillings (Golden Gate) sold for 150,000.00 plus a 10% buyers fee. As far as I know it is the only engine from the Golden Gate line of engines that had the name Schillings-San Francisco cast on the cylinder. If someone finds another one hidden in a barn they will have struck gold.

Very well put Dave. The late Andy Kruse better known as the Grandfather of Elite Gas engines collectors. Stated it best as he once told me :
" If I wanted to look at money, I'd go the the bank !!! "

A good friend has a Golden Gate about the same size as the Schillings that recently sold. He told me several years ago that it was appraised at 1500.00. I told him I would give him double that right now but maybe not tomorrow. We both laughed. I filled him in the other day about the Schillings sale and said I will have to take a mortgage on the farm to buy it now--we both laughed again. That particular Golden Gate engine has an interesting story. A farmer near Walla Walla, Wa. stopped by my uncles place to see if he was interested in a 3HP Witte in the 1970's. He wanted 80.00 for it but uncle wasn't interested at that price so he passed on it. My friends father bought the Witte and the farmer told him of another larger engine in a shed on his farm he might be interested in which turned out to be a Golden Gate. He brought the Golden Gate to my uncles place to show him and he told me that he saw a tear in my uncles eye! All of you that know Gilbert Merry, know that would be a very rare occurance!
