Photo Briggs 4hp Power Reverse

And another recent find, http://www.flickr.com/photos/17087539@N07/, a Briggs 4hp Power Reverse vert. shaft, model #100902, code #7006307, type #0320-01. Year? Application? it has a pulley and a "cup" that looks like it might have been part of a clutch at some time. What exactly does it mean by "Power Reverse"?
Patrick

Would guess the engine is from a rototiller.

Agree with Bill, power reverse decal came from manufacturer of equipment. Reverse was possibly accomplished by running a belt on the pulley for forward and a roller riding the drum for reverse.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I had forgot that the first two digits of the code # was the year of manufacture. This engine was a $4 find, Im sure I could find some use for it.

I have the same engine on my tiller but it does not have that strange cup on the pulley.

A Simplicity front tine tiller I worked on last year had the same (or very similar) setup. The pulley drove a belt, the belt went around a couple idlers and did a 180 degree turn thus driving the tines in reverse. That's were the "reverse power" comes in.

The bottom cone part is one half of a cone clutch. The other half is probably still attached to the tiller the engine came off of. The cone clutch drove the tines forward. It was a neat design but a pain to work on.

The engine looks to be the older "big block" line of B&S 4 & 5 hp engines. As the name suggest, they were larger than other 4 - 5 hp engines. They were well made, probably lasted longer and probably had more torque then their smaller 4 - 5 "cousins". But they were heavier due to there larger size and thus not often used were light and cheap (example: lawnmower) was a requirement. They were, however, often used on high-end Snapper lawnmowers which were often self-propelled so the extra weight was not a problem. Plus the customer paying extra for the high-end lawnmower wanted it to last also.

I might have a parts manual for the Simplicity tiller if you are interested in it.

This is from a 1970 Sears Roto-Spader model 785.290040.

The engine's code means a date of manufacture of June 30, 1970.

Some other Sears Roto-Spader models used the model 100992 type 0330-01 engine, also a B&S 4 HP "big block."

I have an old rotospader with a 4hp tecumseh on it vertical motor. I need a pic of the clutch linkage to the handle. I will have to make some kind of handle to engage the cone clutch. All that is there is a small spring hanging on the clutch lever.

I could sure use it Dave. a pic of the clutch linkage and Handle, would help me immensely.
