Welding 516-70 boiler plate does it need to be stress reliefed after welding.

Default Welding Boiler plate

Welding 516-70 boiler plate does it need to be stress reliefed after welding.

Depends on two things-#1) How thick it is, & #2) Who you ask....

If you're talking about like 3/8" or so, not a problem. 3/4"....well, yeah.....

Actually, 3/4 and under does not need post weld heat treatment per ASME Section I. Other codes may be different. Up to 1" is exempt in the same code if you pre-heat to a minimum of 200 deg F. If it is over 1-1/2 it is automatically required. In order to really assertain whether you do not have to PWHT you need to read the appropriate code section, because there are some "if, thans, and thou's" which may make it applicaple.

A commonly missed part is Post Weld Heat Treatment is an Essential Variable in ASME Section IX. Meaning if your weld procedure is qualified with PWHT and you do not use PWHT for the production weld it is NOT a qualified (certified) weld. The situation is reversable also.

Stress releive with a air powered needle gun on every pass.
