This is one COOL model! Don't know if it's worth the starting bid.....but someone sure put a LOT of work into making one immaculate little model of an Avery engine!

Standard boilerplate-I know nothing of the seller, nor the item sold-just pointing it out as am sure some of the scale model steam folks will love to see it!

Nate Lang, who built the half-scale Star Undermounted engine in the early 1960's, also made a very small, detailed Avery model. This may be that engine.

There is a picture of Lang's engine on the cover September-October 1954 issue of the IMA.

Looks like the same engine without a jacket, and the addition of extension rims. Also appears to have lost the headlight and the lubricator.

It sure is a cool model. I notice that this one has the little steering wheel that changes the gears from low to high. I have been in some Averys that have the wheel, and some that just had a lever that switched from low to high. Which models had which?

There is an air valve (tire valve stem) in the right hand coal bunker. Would this be used to run the engine on compressed air?

The same seller had a highly detailed Case 75 model a few months back, This is all from the same estate. The case was extemely high quality, Insert SS boiler, hand feed inj. pump, steam pump, hidden pres. gauge in the tinder box!. No castings any where. The relief valve and whistle had cut outs in the canopy that was the only none original appearance part about it. LW

Lester Roos of Freeport, Ill built an Avery I think. He was a toolmaker (or something) for Stover gas engines.

As I recall Lester had the remains of the Stover Engine co and for many years supplied all parts for a wide variety of Stovers to the hobby. We met him many years ago at a show in northern Il. a very helpful person. Someone else has taken over his enterprise but I can't recall who. F.J.W.

Here is an old article about Lester, he used to have the Avery at Mt. Pleasant when I was young. it was pretty neat, had a propane tank under the seat of the little cart that he set on while running the engine for fuel.

Your right Mike it is really COOL. If I had an extra pile of money laying around you know what my next toy would be!
The starting bid does seem high but if I owned it I dont know if I would sell it for any less myself, its just to cool. That is if it is as good as it looks. Hopefully it will find a good home.

Do not think this is the engine you are refering to. I believe this is a picture of Lester Roos and his Avery. John

You are so right. It is a masterpeace of workmanship. He always displayed it up a ramp on a table so you did not even have to bend over to admire it.
