I believe it is around 2-1/2HP, based on the book rating of 1.70 HP at 1800RPM and 3.35 HP at 3600 RPM. Hope this helps.

Your engine uses the Briggs Magnematic Magneto. If your engine runs well at idle BUT when you throttle the engine up it starts to miss and sputter, you will think you have a problem with the carb. You Do Not have a problem with the carb. You have a bad coil. The coil, Briggs P/N 290880 is no longer available from Briggs. You can buy one from Small Engine Warehouse that is made in China. I have NOT used one of these coil BUT from what I have read on-line their quality is somewhat hit or miss. I modify a later Briggs coil to replace the 290880 coil.

If you have a bad coil you might also try going to your local Napa, and ordering part #7-01604, which is a replacement, probably Chinese, for the Briggs 290880. It is a special class from Napa, so it might take a couple days to get it in. Retails for around $111.00....... this is a Primeline part, should be the same one sold at Small Engine Warehouse, and O'Reilly's Auto Parts list it for around $70.00 (in my area), with a limited one year warranty.
