Default Witte E15 / 208 Fairbanks mag

This Witte E15 that I'm working on has the most unusual mag I have ever seen!!
It started out in life as a mag for a 208 Fairbanks (clockwise rotation). Then it was made to go counter clockwise and the base was changed to a slotted base. The impulse assembly was also changed and has two impulse clicks for each revolution. It fires on both impulse clicks.
Then it was put on the Witte. It would trip the impulse about 35 degrees past dead center. I was told the engine used to run, but had a bad knock. I could only get it to fire one time and that was it. I finally moved the mag drive gear to where the impulse would trip at TDC. It fired right up.
I was wondering if the timing was causing the knocking sound they were hearing?
It is amazing at the different kinds of riggings you come across on these oilfield engines!!!

Some Oliwell Witte engines came oem with a FM mag. It may have many of the internal parts but it is specific the engine.

Some Oliwell Witte engines came oem with a FM mag. It may have many of the internal parts but it is specific to the engine. You will find a similar mag on Arrow engine too. The impulses are set up for two lags but they only fire once.

What's the model number? FM 208 uses a FMX 1B2C. Older ones uses a "J" mag, don't remember the model off the top of my head.

That's too much advance for any engine. There may be 35 degrees total but you only want 10-15 before TDC running. It wouldn't surprise me to see it impulse at 20 ATDC on start up. If it's firing at speed on 35 BTDC I'd bet the drive isn't timed right.

But, the mag you have may be some hacks failed attempt to build a mag for that engine and may explain why the engine was abandoned.

Eddie, this mag was originally a X1B2C. Then a D was stamped over the C. So that now makes it a X1B2D. Another C was added to the CW to make it CCW.
Any idea what the D letter would represent?

Yes, the rotation is reversed either by replacing the magnetic rotor or re-key waying it. The points and breaker plate are then changed for that rotation. The impulse coupling would have replaced for ccw too. A FM 346-503-739 use the FMX 1B2D. The 1B2C and D both only have 15 degrees total lag.
