The unit should be covered under warranty, if you want to fix yourself thats fine. It will shut down if certain parameters are not met i.e. oil pressure or not generating. Have you done any type of checking to confirm essential operating conditions. Does it generate within the two seconds prior to shutdown.

Like driverR says
You could try bypassing the oil pressure switch to rule out low pressure or a bad switch
BUT if there's no or low oil pressure things could get nasty fast

thanks alot for the help, unit is covered under warranty , but i wanted to know in time of crisis, you know how hard it is to get a tech out during power outtage, if i get a chance will try to get over to the unit to check a few more of the things everyone suggested. It makes me frustrated and mad when you can't solve something lol. i went to motorcycle mechanic school years ago and after fixing my own generator i find them interesting , like a complecated puzzle , can never learn too much , plus if you find it is something minor during a black out and you can fix it makes one very happy customer

If it shuts down after 4 seconds then it is likely the low oil pressure switch. If it shuts down after 2 seconds, then likely it is the rpm sensor on the flywheel. It can go bad or go out of adjustment. Check the sensor output while running , even if only 2 secs, you should get 0.4-0.6 v AC and the sensor should have 1000 ohms +- 10 % resistance. You can adjust the sensor to flywheel gap down to "one half turn" in Generac speak if the voltage output is not there. Also listen if the starter disengages or not after the 2 sec runtime. I it does disengage like normal, then you likely have an engine problem. But don't know your exact model, so these are only generic Generac troubleshooting guidelines I have learned.

Wstang,

Did you remove the oil pressure sensor temporarily? Is the customer in Shelton? Shelton is super close, right down Route 8 for me.

Most modern generacs won't start at all unless they see a zero voltage from the oil pressure switch, verifying that it is there, it's a fail safe. So if you remove the oil press switch wire, you should get a no start at all. Unless the logic changed on this model. But worth a try.

If it is under warranty. Don't touch it. Generac finds out and you can kiss warranty goodby. I have seen it happen many times.

Billy is right Wstang, see if the warranty will kick in, it sounds like a simple issue to correct, and why spend money when warranty will cover it.

Did anyone check the oil level? I sure wouldn't let generac see it unless it was full of oil! and after several days runtime, maybe it ran out....more common then you might think!
