I found out this was bought at a cost of $500.00 for the replacement Willy's engine if the PO ever needed one. I've seen a video of it running for a few seconds and it sounded good. The unit has 3572 hrs on the clock and has a rebuild tag on the block from 1969. I started it the other day on a temporary fuel tank but only for a few seconds as the water pump leaks way too much to risk anything. I did find out it wouldn't stop with the toggle switch so I had to choke it out; probably the toggle itself is bad or the stop relay? My big question is; does it run well for the long haul, govern under load and produce AC/DC power? My plans.......IDK? I've ordered a water pump and removed it from the start cart it was on. It has the original muffler which was cut off to convert to one that worked while on the cart. I found out the fuel tank drain cock was cracked and subsequently broke off in the fitting. I removed the tank and got that out OK. Now I've started to remove everything I can in prep for paint once I confirm it runs and produces power. As I believe it's fairly complete, all I can see it needing thus far is a 12V fuel gauge, one side panel and a spring loaded latch. It has had some damage to one idler pulley (which still spins freely) and the cooling fan has been welded at some point. It looks as if an exhaust stud is broken off and the governor engine bracket it a bit off kilter too. I'll deal with all those as I move along. If I get really bored, I can try and source all the spare parts and tools that go with it too.

I have a PE-95 for backup power at my house and I have used it continually for days and even weeks at a time. They are thirsty but cutting the head as I suggested in a prior post significantly reduces fuel consumption. Very practical and reliable as is anything made for the Army. So yes, it is a worthwhile item to get running.

Roger that Amax! Any idea where to source a side panel from? I was told on another forum that the armature bearing was sealed and is now full of 66 year old grease, any concern with that?

Almost forgot, in order to repair the governor bracket and to re-install the cold weather heat stove I'll have to remove the head nuts then re-torque them, big mistake?

Just out of curiosity, how much did you shave the head, and what kind of fuel savings did you get? I have a PE-95K, and with it using about 1 gallon per hour no load, it is more of a lawn ornament than a generator.

Hi Kevin, I see that you also have a PE-95K. My governor pulley looks like a replacement one from a hardware store, I was wondering if you could measure the outside diameter of yours so I can compare. I agree, mine is going to look a very nice shop conversation piece. I even ordered the correct paint to give this a fresh coat.

A lot of people get rid of these units for scrap so chances are you will find one soon enough. I can also send you the measurements from mine as it should not be too hard to cobble a replacement.

Not a problem. You can remove one or two head nuts without hurting anything. That is a low compression motor. Honestly, I did not replace the cold weather heat stove on mine as the unit lives inside and I did not see the need.

I knew someone would ask and the hard truth is 'I forgot'. But I recall that it was quite a lot (in terms of I was surprised how much could safely be planed off). I probably got the figure from military Jeep forums.

I pulled the head and had it cut at a local auto parts store with a machine shop. Cost something like $40 - now that I remember, LOL.

The difference was astounding. It reduced my gallons per hour by a third.

I also bought a Solex carburetor to try out but it has been sitting on the shelf for years. Sigh.

Sometime if you get a chance, perhaps you could measure the compression PSI. I imagine somewhere in the vicinity of 130 to 135PSI would make a substantial improvement.
