Default Run Away 12v149 vs 600kw Alternator

Well my long overdue vacation was rudely interrupted by a job offer I couldn't refuse, so I'm back to sea.

This generator exploded a couple days before I joined the ship. She ran away on start up, the automatic overspeed didn't trip the dampers. I'm told she quickly blew the alternator rotor apart which then tore the alternator from its mounting base as the engineer left the compartment. Efforts were made to remote close the fuel supply but she ran till she quit. The engine has some bent valves, broken valve springs and bridges... as for the alternator... I think the Detroit wins!

That definitely can be called a shitstorm. I'll bet the engineer needed a few stiff drinks after that one.

Run away, Run away! Must have made some noise until it blew. I am surprised the engine itself didn't frag - at high speed, no load, it must have really been screaming! Any busted piston/bent rods? Have fun with your new project! Oh yeah - sorry about your lost vacation!

Holy $4!t!!!

It looks like the poles are still intact- what part blew?

Will be interested to hear what caused it.

Looks like a lot of scrap metal there. Glad nobody was hurt or worse. I wonder how long it has been since the air shutter safety was tested?

This happened just days before I got here. The Engineer was definitely shook up, he said days later when he started the other Detroit (successfully) that his hands were shaking entering the start time in the log book. It looks like some busted valve bridges and springs, the crank case inspection doors are off but she didn't frag the bottom end, not to say it isn't hurt though...one bank of valve cages is out and a couple liners have some scoring. That's as far as I've seen so far. She has a rigid rack though so my guess in an injector stuck and held the rest full rack the dampers were free but the overspend trip failed to actuate them it seems. The other now has a manual pull cable next to the start handle.

So I am curious why they called you to join a ship with a blown up generator, do they go underway with a problem of this magnitude, are you still in port and will be repaired before leavbing, enough redundant generators to sail without this one, make repairs underway, what?

The ship has three main generators plus an emergency generator (only capable of running essentials such as steering and engine cooling pumps). They installed a 500kw portable box generator on the deck to replace the blown up Detroit temporarily. If they choose to repair the Detroit that will be my project, but they may replace it with a new CAT due to cost/parts availability. I think if it were up to me I'd fix the Detroit.

Yes! Definitely put in the vote to fix the Detroit! Even with it's long head start, it'll probably STILL outlive any modern.
